I've quickly created a new UT2004 map in a few days time (starting in the pop-quiz week, which ended this weekend). I'm very proud of what I've achieved in such small time. But this map isn't close to finishing. I know it won't be a matter of hours to make a map. The fine tuning and adding the last details takes unpredicted time. The map plays in one large 8-sided room deep DownBelow the water surface. It isn't a big map, pretty small. The unique thing about this map is that you can shoot and look trough many 'shield' walls. See the screenshots to get what I'm talking about. You cannot walk trough the shields but you can shoot trough with any weapon. In the middle of the map there is a tube with water in it, kept in the tube shape by energy. The middle tube can be electrified at 2 locations in the map, making it a less prefered way up. Take a look at the screenshots. Anyway, here are some screenshots.

this map reminds me of liandri core and morbias in a underwater station.

This is a fun map, but I got a few things. The ramps that lead to the next higher floor is hard to get around. You can only pass on the outside and even then it can be a bit tricky at times. The lighting seems to be really dark on players and weapons, but not on the world geometry itself. It seems kinda weird, they don't quite seem to match up right. Lastly, There is absolutely no cover in here save for some really thin posts and such that can only protect a small bit of you. I love the uniqueness to the level, but is there any way to add at least some cover? An idea that comes to mind is something like this one level had, I believe it was called something like DM-Reconstruct or something. Might've been part of a community bonus pack. Anyways, it had forcefield looking things, but when you walked near them, chunks of metal or something flew up to where you would step or bump into. It's pretty cool. Maybe you could have something like that, maybe not as complex, but say if you stepped on or near something some partial cover flipped up somewhere, and if you left it'd go back down. As an example, if people stuck to the inside walls, people wouldn't be able to shoot them from the sides, but back, front, up and below are still vulnerable. It'd be an interesting feature, maybe with some tweaks and such. Also, perhaps make the shields more visible? I have a hard time finding my way out of the outer parts of the arena, at least on the bottom floor where there is no walkway to show the exits. |
