Post subject:  The Process [pt 1]

This thread is simply to show off several pages of my notebook in which I draw many of the designs I possibly want to create models of. A lotta people seem to say I model really fast and get stuff pushed out pretty damn quick. Really, I do take my time, but I also have a bit of a vision of where I'm going when I do create new 3d models.

Modelling isn't exactly a hobby that takes small investments of time, but it sure does make that time go by much faster when you get into the mood of the creation of a new baby! Simply put, I love creating new models, even of older classics!

--

The purpose of this specific thread is to showcase the first step I take in creating a 3d model. This, of course, is to create concept art. I am not a great artist, so I just do the simplest thing possible: side-view drawings. While it's possible for me to move to 3d views, it's not really worth my time to do so: I'm making a 3d model of the stuff anyways!

Anyways, I'll just go though each image and explain the weapon concepts you see in the images...

This is the original drawings page of the H7X1. I originally started by wanting to create a H&K G3 remake weapon. Obviously this snowballed into something almost completely different. I simply lay down the basic design stuff on the drawings, leaving off any attachments I'd add later on. Reason I do this is simple: It leaves me with less clutter when I'm looking at the drawings when I create the weapon. However, if you've seen the weapon model (on the BW Community site, check it out!), you'll notice I've added a few things for the concept drawing: these are my texturing cues.

I also noted a lot of the objects on the weapon so I'd be able to remember what I was wanting to make on the weapon later on in the 3d build of the weapon. I've got nothing more to say about this particular page... so let's move on!

This is my drawing of the SPGt fully-automatic shotgun. I designed this particular weapon on two guns: The SPAS-12 and USAS-12. At the time I had been playing Far Cry 2... a bit too much. I really had taken a liking to the designs of the two weapons and wanted to see what I could make by combining the two. What I got is before your eyes now.

I liked this weapon particularly since I believed there are too few shotguns in the base BW mod. My goal for all my weapons I create is to try making them for BW someday. Of course, that's like step... 5. Step 1 obviously being art, 2 being the model, 3 and 4 being anims and UVs, and 5 being implementation to UT.

Oh, if you wonder, the top right part of the page shows what I imagined looking though the ironsights would have looked like.

This page contains a wide variety of random weapons I drew. Obviously the majority aren't even modelled for. However, you'll notice my weapon concepts for the original remake of the Calico 960 I talked about in my SMG thread. Alongside that, you'll find my Mac-10 original remake idea. In the end, I went with making a Mac-10 model based on what I saw in Far Cry 2. I felt that version was the better looking one anyways.

The RAC-551 will probably never see the light of the day, since it was just a combo of a CAR-15, G36, AK47, and SCAR. Please don't bother me on that weapon, I was bored when I designed it one time during lunch break.

For my final page of showing to you guys, you get to see a whole page of my failing attempts to design a good Machine Pistol. I obviously had something going more towards the end, but I decided I'd rather make a Mac-10 in the end. For simplicity's sake, I was wanting something not as hard to model. To me, pistols are the hardest weapons to model. Something about the handle not feeling as natural...

If I feel like it someday, I might possibly make the MP89. But that might never happen, I just don't like modelling pistols at all. All my previoius attempts at normal pistols were failures, and I consider them my weak point in modelling. However, I don't mind if anyone decides to have a go at making the models based on my concept art I've shown here. You can try all you want! :D

And so concludes The Process [pt 1]... I'll have a part 2 sometime soon. Obviously that's the showing of a model and how I create it, or at least how I did in the past! I can't really show my current stuff since I did models with much less versions than I did previously.

actually I rarely do drawings to 3D modelling. perhaps I should begin to do some!

They REALLY help when you need something to fall back on for inspiring yourself to keep going! As I told zero over MSN, I took about 2 or 3 months to get to what you see. Just for kicks.... here's what my first concept art image I did, abck for the FY73 MS/R (named the FY74-M in the pic though...).[br]

Sweet!

You can draw so much better than I...

It just takes patience really. Wish I had that for larger drawings I want to begin trying... I mean, I just don't have enough skill at drawing things like faces or limbs... Mainly faces.

Anyways... I think this might be a funny idea but you never know.. ask me any question you've got!

Edit: Oh, make sure it's about concept art drawing.. not something random like where I live... okay, I'll let ones about my sig pic go. :P
