I started working on a new map just about 3 hours ago. It's a bit of a simple concept: Freerunning combined with UT. In this map, it's all about how well you can traverse the level while maintaining a good fight with your competitors. You also have to worry about falling off the level, since it's practically death to fall off. Practically because I haven't setup kill zones at the bottom just yet. With 5 buildings to leap across, this level will be sure to test how well you can do trick jumps, as well as provide constant action for just about any player. It is impossible to hide for long, so face your opponent and run the roofs in search of new heights. Failing to do so may lead to a grave, 20 stories down. -- The screenshot only shows a small glimpse into the current stage of the level. It does give a good feel for how the level does look in the general lay of the roofs.

This sounds like a fun idea. I bet someone was playing Mirror's Edge lately.

Heh, it should prove to be. And uh.... last time I played ME was about 3 weeks ago. I just got the idea of mixing UT and ME by listening to the song Spiral (Pendulum song) while playing a UT match. Oh, and here's a new screenshot.

It definitely looks like a good idea. and looks cool. perhaps add lot of cover in the roofs, and remember that in BW sometimes double jump doesn't work... is it BSP or static meshes? |

With BW Sprinting on, it'd probably make the level a ton easier to traverse, but other than that, you probably have to watch out for mess ups with the double jump not happening. Many parts of the level have some decent cover, but these are completed rooftops, so they won't have an excess of things on the roof besides what you could possibly see on a real rooftop. Speaking of BSP... it's BSP buildings, but I'll be using statics for the roof cover and such. This map isn't really as well suited to BW as you might think it could be, but it's probably best off using BW Sprint to assist in the jumping. Without any BW mods on, I was still able to make every building jump (from higher to lower ones), but only by mere inches. Also, it took about 3 times for me to successfully wall-jump on that one building in the distance to cross the gap of lower floors. It sure can challenge you to get good at your trick jumps! |

Another day, another screenshot! This time it's nearing completion, but I still need to add a lot more random crap onto the rooftops. As it stands, you can do a form of wallrunning on basically every wall, but not building windows. Those pipes on the sides of buildings are also ladders of sorts, but they do the laddering for you sometimes.

Actually this map is about the size of CTF-Grassyknoll! The fences you see in the map are about 2x the height of your player, if that puts it to scale for you. It takes me about 45 seconds to leap across the level, from highest to lowest points on the buildings. I'm adding in a ton of cover stuff to the buildings right now, so I should be able to have it completed by.... tomorrow at earliest, but Friday at latest. |
