When I start a bot-match with Ballistic Weapons or JunkWars the game tends to lag (not horrifically, but noticable - gets better if I disable the blood / gore options) then, after about 5 minutes, it crashes, with this error: UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22] OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600) CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 2169 MHz with 1023MB RAM Video: RADEON 9600 SERIES (6618) General protection fault! History: RenderLevel <- DM-Gael.myLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FPlayerSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngine::Draw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- Level Gael <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop <- FMallocWindows::Free <- FMallocWindows::Realloc <- 10910191 0 FArray <- FArray::Realloc <- 0*2 <- FMallocWindows::Free I think this means that the game is trying to render too much stuff at once, but I'm not a modder or coder (not for UT anyway) so I don't really know. Can anyone help? I'm going to try reducing the settings for now. It definately improves when the blood effects are disabled and there are less bots etc etc, though the Lightning Gun lags like a bastard, so I'll probably disable that I also tried reinstalling UT in case there was a conflict with something somewhere, which had little effect. Having reinstalled UT, I installed the Epic Content Pack and the latest patch (in that order) EDIT: Tried again, with reduced settings. Same map, though this time it was an arena match with Battlerifles UT2004 Build UT2004_Build_[2005-11-23_16.22] OS: Windows XP 5.1 (Build: 2600) CPU: AuthenticAMD PentiumPro-class processor @ 2169 MHz with 1023MB RAM Video: RADEON 9600 SERIES (6618) General protection fault! I really enjoy the mod, and it's a lot of fun when it lasts EDIT: Just tried again with even lower settings. Actually made things worse... |

This is not related to the game trying to render too much, your system is way above the recommended requirements. Just use comfortable settings. Does the crash always happen after 5 minutes or when a certain situation occurs? |

It seems to be random. I've had it crash at the very start and had it crash well into a game EDIT: I'll try a 1vs1 bot match. That way I might be able to find whats causing it. Also: Have I installed UT et all correctly? Install went thusly: UT2004 Epic Content Pack thingy 3369 patch JunkWars 1.1 Beta (BW core not included) BW v2 (JunkWars 2 patch included) I may have gotten the Content Pack and Patch installed in the wrong order (I though the Pack had the patch included, and only discovered it didn't when I tried to install BW) |

What you are experiencing are script errors, they happen when something is wrong in the code execution; which can have many reasons. Judging by the error you are getting, reInstalling BW2 might do the trick. And I mean a clean reInstall, not just overwriting files. But that install order looks correct, did you by any chance use the umods to install BW2/JW? |

Yes, it was a Umod install. I could try it without Junkwars I suppose |

If that fails, try the zip installs. But remember to delete every single BW and JW file from the UT2004 directory before reInstalling. (in the case of umods, just run setup.exe in the UT2004\System folder and unInstall the mod from there) |

I didn't see any mention of this problem you have occuring when you don't use ballistic weapons. Consider running these two experiments: 1: Run a game with bloody hell and ballistic sprint. Does the same problem occur? 2: Run UT04 at highest settings with a bunch of mutators except any of the ballistic mutators. Any problems there? I doubt it's the video card problem, since I have the Radeon 9800, which is your vid car's big brother. If you haven't updated your driver recently, you can do so here - http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html If all that doesn't work, you could try thinking outside the box. Could something other than UT or mods be causing it? For example, if you have disk defragmenter going + some other applications updating, that could screw things up. One other thing to consider is the "purity" of your HD. How good is your virus protection and firewall? If you wanna do a check, try this program I often use to keep an eye on things, called "Spy Bot". It does a scan for viruses and maleware - http://www.spybot.info/ |

Something else can't cause an engine script error. It has to be something coming from within the game's code, or the mutators you are using. |

Probably because you don't know how to extract & install a mod from a zip file. But umods tend to not install correctly which has no connection with lack of knowledge on the user's behalf |

I have Spybot S&D, AVG Free Edition and Adaware version something-or-other. They all automatically update themselves, and all have done this recently, and all ask permission to update first (so if one was updating, I'd know). I also did a full virus scan a few weeks ago. My computer's clean |

You wouldn't be getting a script error if your computer was infected with a virus or spyware. |

Just tried an ordinary UT match with Bloody Hell and Ballistic Sprint mutators active. It went a bit better (I managed to finish a game, and appear to be surprisingly good at getting headshots with the Lightning gun). Half-way into my second match, my computer reset itself. I hadn't killed my opponent (1vs1) - I'd just activated the Invisibilty adreniline power. About 5-10 seconds after that, reboot. According to wikipedia, GPF errors, if not caught in time, will force the system to reboot, so it was probably the same error Also: Firefox crashed mid-way through me typing this. I'm beginning to doubt the stability of my system... EDIT: Just tried an ordinary UT match with no mutators at all. Same error. I'll try reinstalling UT again, but in this order: UT patch Epic Content Pack thing Junk Wars 1.1 (BW base not included) BW (Junk Wars patch 2.0 included) EDIT: Graaaah! I've just reinstalled UT, with patch and Epic Content thing, but no mods or anything like that. Same error! What the hell is causing this? I've had UT2004 for over a year now, it's never done this! EDIT: Tried updating the drivers. My computer went a bit loopy in the process, and the error still persists |

That does sound like a system problem rather than a game problem. I'm not sure what would do that though... |

Yup. My system's gone senile. Bah. We're going to build the next one. Might get a new one soon anyway. This one's about 4 years old, and starting to show it's age... Though we do still have a Windows 95, that's over ten years old and still working

That script error must be related to your computer executing UT2 while unstable. I suggest you back up important files, because you are describing symptoms of a dying hard drive, and if you hear a click sound from your case; panic. But on a positive note, of course this can be just OS instability or other hardware is dying on you, or the hardware is just not properly installed into their socket on the mobo. |

Never heard of a HD clicking. I heard about the "Click of Death" for ZIP disks, is that the same with hard drives? |

Yep, years ago I heard that click once and seconds later I lost 20 GBs of data. |
