Discussion on this board has inspired me to make my own efforts into creating weapons. I figure that if I want my idea's to be fully understood then perhaps I should Prototype them! Unfortunately I would not know where to begin. I need to know: -How to find weapon data -How to create projectiles and damage types -How to create effects -How to assign properties and values. I am aware this requires an understanding of U-script. Any links, tips, flames-for-not-searching-for-previous-threads, and tutorials are appreciated from anybody. Thank you

While I'm still a novice myself, make sure you check out UnrealWiki and this page in particular. I didn't fully read over it yet, but I'm sure it will help you understand some things better.
How I started was just taking the flak cannon and making numerous variations of it simply by tweaking the default properties. Heck, even now I still am at that same point; only altering default properties, but those alone give you so much potential you can probably get a decent start at some of your prototypes with just messing with def. props. I'm glad you want to take some initiative towards getting some weapon ideas of yours brought to fruition.

hey i recommend, that you check out all weapon classes in BW.. start of by looking for one of the main weapons, and look for what it uses.. DamageTypes, effects, firemodes, the works.. the best way, is alwyays to look at stuff already there.. DC did organise BW in a very eficient way
if you need more, and details, PM DC..

www.angelmapper.com she has a weapon scripting tutorial. From there I could make the nade-cannon. flak cannon shooting 10 grenades. |

Really, although it sounds cliched, the best way to learn is to teach yourself. Just get WOTGreal or something similar, download the UT04 scripts, and get a simple tutorial, and follow the tutorial, which will tell you most of the technicalities. The rest is all your own work. And as you go, you'll start to think like a coder, and you'll see where you could look in the UT04 scripts to find something similar to what you want to do, so you can get your basic idea running smoothly before adding your own twist. Damage types, ammo, effects, and pickups are incredibly easy things to make. Weapons, muzzle flash, and 3rd-person attachments are easy too if the weapon model is correctly built. Honestly, projectiles and hitscan are the only hard part, especially when they do complex things like the Bio-Rifle or the Link Gun's secondary mode. |

Don't forget that 3D Buzz put out some great video tutorials. They can take a person who doens't know the difference betwen an int and float, and walk you through modeling, coding, and implementing your own weapon in UT. I'd do my own modeling, but cannot find a patch to export meshes from maya 7.1 (all I have is 7.0 patch and it doesn't work). |

Thank you all for the helpful responces. Unreal Wiki is unavailable to me but I can check out Angel Mappers site. And I will keep an eye out for those scripts. True words Miracle Matter, I had to teach myself most of mapping and I dont expect this to be different. But it is nice to be pointed in the right direction. Where might I find WOTGreal along with these scripts and tutorials you speak of? If I can pull this off then perhaps I can at last fix the infinite ammo bug with the WoE Crispe. |

Here is the forum for uscript at 3d buzz: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/forumdisplay.php?f=121 I got 7 gigs of video training modules ona a bonus disk when I bought UT2004. don't hope for any download links to the videos. Private distribution is encouraged, but posting them on a site is not allowed. See if someone in your area has the "editors choice" UT2004 disks. Here's WOTGreal: http://www.wotgreal.com/ It has a "Hello world" tutorial to get you started with how to write code, compile it, and use it in game. There is also a way you can decompile the existing UT2004 code. You do this by going to the tools tab and clicking stuff... I forgot as my attempt to pick up coding was a false start I dropped quickly. If you do decompile the script using WOTGreal, make sure you are decompiling a clean install of UT2004. There are already so many classes and stuff that comes with the game that mods will just clutter things up more; especially if you have 14 gigs of mods like me. |

I do want to know how you can create a damage type which makes the dead bodies have 0 gravity. PLEASE Tell me, I've tried it a couple of times in different ways and I haven't succeed yet. |

^ For that, you'd want a mutator that replaces the regular corpses with a new actor class with different defaultproperties. Very simple, should be 2 new classes at most. As for the Crispe, I think that's actually a side effect of being able to select it with 0 ammo (for the flashlight). I'd be more interested in making the bots wield it better (try this: go play a Crispe arena match, and post your scores here). |

I wondered if that may have something to do with it. I know what you mean about Crispe arena, bots seem to think it never has any ammo at all. I was also interested in scrapping the torch for a new fire mode altogether, if that fire mode uses ammo the bug could be averted. The torch never was very useful. On top of that I want to make the Soar deadlier. Thanks for the links Tyster. |

The SOAR is deadly, it's a little weaker than the stock AR but it's really accurate. I usually kill faster with the SOAR than the AR. And I also hate the flashlight, but what kind of firemode could it have? Maybe a quick charged pulse that instantly ignites? |

Really? I still find the SOAR takes a while to kill things. Its accuracy is fine, I would make it dual wieldable like the AR and leave its damage alone. But im keen on making its secondary fire rocket propelled. As for the Crispe secondary, my idea's on a deathray was originally intended for the Crispe. I mentioned it for Bulska's ZaP rifle since it would fit in well with that weapon also. |

OMG IT SHOOTS! LOL So I just figured out how to create something that vaguely resembles a weapon, yay! I followed everyones advice here on this thread. I went ahead and breathed life into my previous weapon concept: The PLETHORA This is an alpha version but I think I created a basic image of what this thing might be like in game. Its just the basic functions for now, I havnt figured out how to make the rockets swarm or lock onto things. So far this is what i got[br][br] |

Grats! It looks pretty cool! My first weapon was a flak cannon that shot bloody gibs instead of metal shards.
What map is that? |

Wow MM that must have been real messy. I still have a while to go with the PLETHORA Right now im working on a nice blue muzzle flash and some sounds. Now THAT is really hard to get it working right. Currently the muzzle flash either appears right in my face or not at all. No idea why. Once that is done I will work on that special function. Question: To make a special function I need to reference the ballistic superclass first...right? And the map is called DM-1on1-Neon, its a map I created that is based on a tron-like alternate dimention Why the outrageous textures? Its based on the first map I made and when I looked through the texture packages I went: "OOH Look at the pretty colours!" |
