I keep watching news and announcements for any word on the next release of BW. No updates since 06/07/06.
What's happening? Any luck with fixing net problems?

their release should be in the middle of the week or friday.

We are expecting to release a DIFFERENT, NEW mod later this week (looks like late in the week so far).

There will be a BW update soon after (can't say exactly when) with a few fixes etc. Timing of the BW update depends on how many problems arise from the new mod release. This won't be a major release, just an update on a lot of reported problems.

The next MAJOR BW release is still quite far off...but will be worth the wait

Yup, but will that small release be called BW1.8 or 1.72 or something?

Yeah,the next release will be a minor number change. if its only fixes it will be 1.72,if theres anything new then 1.8

anyway, you developers must not forgo all the optimizations in 1.70 that made it so much easier to play, when you release the next version...Also, please preload all guns so it doesn't lag everytime I pick a new one up. 1.72 better not be 50 MB larger, or i'm going to lose a lawt of players...

I think you should turn the pre-load weapons into a thread on it's own to highlight it's importance.
I know there's a LOT of content planned for the next major version...1.8 (or 1.72) shouldn't be much change from current.

Having said that, I do know they are looking at trying to break it up a bit, so it's not quite so big...one way to do that, is to seperate the maps...maybe put the vehicles on their own...not use such high res textures etc.
Maybe even go as far as releasing a seperate special release with the hi-res stuff in it for those who really want it and can handle it...

and heheman.. what are these notorious net problems? we have had no serious issuses in LAN play.. we cannot find the rail high bug.. we tested it in every possible way, but still no rail high.. but we do know about some others u talked about, like some guns not firing for the second shot, and FP9's not showing explosions, and some others we got on our list..

and our skins are preloaded i think.. and the next version will be a code update..

the next big release however might be 50mb larger.. cause of new guns and stuff..

then there is a map pack coming soon, then vehicles, and the very likely "simple weapons"

to Grasshopper, were u the guy with the blue screen? it would help if we could get the log files after these crashes, they will most likely show us exactly to the problem..

My two cents, could some of these problems be due to quirks in some ones equipment rather than in the program (mod) ?

Well, there will be a BW code update very soon, along with the other mod!
BUT, Grasshopper if you want those net bugs fixed fast, you should get me the logs from those crashes... That would help a LOT!!!

Yes, that is actually the reason most of the time.

The rail high bug is still pretty common on my server, you get it about one in every six shots. As for dividing ballistic into separate releases, please don't do that, we don't have enough players to further separate them. I guess you guys never get much of the net bugs in LAN play, so unless you can connect to my server somehow, I can't help there. Maybe you can right debug prints into the next release and I can give you my server log from a BW game?

what are you talking about? theres something called beta-testing.

yeah good beta testers find out everything thats wrong with the mod. so don't worry. And i'm just guessing but maybe you just have a werid server or somethng cause no-one else has the high rail-gun shot bug.

That high railgun shot bug, is it by any chance simply the resault of the inaccuracy while running?

The "high Rail" and "high Smiper " have been issues from day one. Those and other bugs seem to be only with net play. Beta testing is only useful if the developers can duplicate the problems. Rune Storm tests with LAN and single player. Net play is not possible for them, so, they can't fix net issues. People who run servers or play on servers see these problems. Others never do. In single player mode , it's a great mod. For net play, all of the bugs drive you crazy.

Now that is what BW is all about!

Well, in that case the RS guys will need external help to get those bugs sorted out.

It depends if the bug is recognized as a script bug, which is the most likely possibility.

I think I've thought up a way to create some "lag" on their test network, which might help with those bugs. I'll discuss it with them and we'll try it out after the beta release this weekend (they're kinda busy right now!).
Maybe we can try it out sometime next week and see if we can find that damn railgun bug.

Just an idea....but is it possible to host a server and just invite a few people to join and some as spectators with the idea to test something...let them play with some bots, then use that playersonly command to "freeze" the game...and check those bots weapons (well, the ones with railguns)...??
I've done that on my lan before and I did get some very interesting results with the railgun...but I couldn't reproduce it again I'm thinking it might be easy to to find problems on a server with clients that have "true" lag etc.

I'm convinced that it is a lag releated issue..which is why we can never find the damn thing...otherwise I suggest DC write some logging stuff for the railgun only (maybe with a switch) for the server guys, so we can try and find it...

Yep, if this bug is lag related, then the only way to fix it is to fix the code of the RG to make the lag not affect the projectile in this way.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. The railgun shot animation recoil makes it point up. When there is a slight amount of lag, the acknowledgement from the player client comes back after the animation has already started, so the railgun is now pointed higher than its normal position. That is why the projectile shoots higher.

As for the grenade launcher... I don't know how it's coded, but I'm going to speculate that some option (boolean or something that controls if the gun can be fired) can only be changed when the gun isn't in the firing animation, and because of lag, it doesn't affect the client, only the server. The second shot "resets" this value or whatever so the gun is fired normally on the third.

As for beta-testing, I saw your beta last time, but I also realize you didn't have nearly enough players to catch bugs. That's why I offered to use my server, along with its playerbase, as a debug center, and for you to make a release that outputs to the logfile.

It would be a bad idea not to make your server a bug squashing center, it is a good deal RS, don't refuse it.
