Do any of you people think that the grs9, ranger, and deermaster gunshots sound funny? The grs9 doesnt really sound like a gun, it sounds like a plop. The deermaster sounds a little bit like a bell, but it's not as bad as the ranger rifle, which really sounds like a bell, or a ping sound

The HAMR should have a louder boom to it. Since it is so powerful, the sound needs to match its strength

I hate to tell you, but a big part of the reason for weird/weak sounds is the audio sub-system of the engine. People have imported better sounds to the stock UT2 weapons, but when in-game they sound washed out and weak.

Maybe the devs can do better with the GRS9, Ranger R9 and the Deermaster, but I doubt they could make the HAMR sound more powerful.

Anyway, I'm not that bothered by the sounds of those guns. I think they sound kind of cool with that unusual sound.

The only one I'm bothered by is the ranger. It sounds like it has a silencer or something.

Strange thing about the engine. (o,o)

I don't think the game's audio system is to blame. I extracted the wav files and listened through them outside the game and they sound about the same as they did in-game.

Most of the weapon sounds aren't particularly realistic. The M806 and RS8 sound pretty wonky. None of the silenced weapon sounds are particularly realistic. The Fifty-9 doesn't sound like a gun at all.

The m806 is okay but i think but the rs8 sounds weak

If they were, our hearness wouldn't last long.

The volume is a different thing. :P

Many times real life weapons doens't nice pleasing enough. So we give them our own sounds. :) I doubt a railguns does that loud scream.

Since we're talking about gun sounds, would this be a good place to discuss why some sounds are great and some are not? FOr example, I noticed that gun sounds in UT99 sounded loud; not just in volume, but in its somewhat static-like, almost over-amplified quality. Then, in UT04, they sound weak, but not so hard on the ears at higher volume level. Now, in UT3, I think they did a good job going back to the UT99 kinda sound temperament, but without making me wonder if my speaker diaphragms were tearing apart whenever I hear a rocket launcher being fired.

Yeah, I was just being an ass, that's all. 8)

Although the gun sounds are rarely realistic, I do like the way they sound. I especially like the sound of the revolver that came with BWBP4. And the tactical shotgun.

We like the raily sound. :3

The only gun that I hate the sound on is probably just that R78. It was originally a .42 hunting rifle, right? Then why does it sound like a little .22 hunting rifle? It needs a lower pitch I think...

i'm fine with my sounds.. don't all you people have sub-woofers?

You're also kinda limited in the things you can do with downloadable and self recorded sounds fro mthe backyard..

The R9 ranger rifle sound is among my favourites, and that will definetly not change ;) Same with the Railguns screech.. makes it unique.. Who said we were ever going for realistic anyway? :D

FYI, i do have to decrease sound quality to actually get them into the game.. !mistrust

I think BJ means that the engine can not output the sounds at the quality that they are made to be in(so it goes from high quality... to possibly a lower quality).

The sounds are good when you get used to them.
At first i didnt liked R9 sound too but now i think it fits good to that weapon.

it has a nice echo to it. Im more concerned with the r9, it sounds like a ping. ping, ping.

Sort of, but UT2 can output sounds at 44.1 kHz with any bitrate as far as I know. I would say the fault lies in the audio engine itself, the decoding process. Different audio libs do it in their own way, hence the reason you can find both good and shitty audio codecs on the net, for many filetypes like ogg or mp3.

I do like the Deermaster's firing sound. I've actually replaced my R9's sound with the Deermaster's.

How did you do that. Please tell me!!

Author:  Bjossi [ Tue May 06, 2008 10:23 pm ]
Post subject:  Weapon sounds

Two ways: Replacing the sound file itself, or change the weapon's code that controls which sound files are used.
