Say all these wonderful things came from an expansion to UT2004 and not from some ver skilled and ambitious modder, would you buy it? I for sure would. :) I really find this mod to be just so good.

Probably not... I would have probably ended up not playing UT2k4 anymore afte a while on top of that. I don't buy expansion packs, it just says the company was too lazy to wait until they could finish what was for the expansion pack. I understand sequels, but not sequels that are really just expansions (like the same game, but now with a 2 in front and with some new missions)...

So are you saying Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is just iD being lazy?

There's so much I could say against your "argument", Adam...

Anyways, if this was now an expansion pack, I would definitely buy it, no questions asked.

Me too, but I would probably have wanted a demo to give the goodies a try first.

And I'm with you on the expansion packs, Xav. When a developer releases a new campaign that extends a game, it is NOT lazyness. That is like saying HalfLife 2 exists because Valve were too lazy in 1998 to just keep working on HL1.

If I had the money,yes.
It is almost a game in itself so it would be a good buy.

I would not buy any UT2004 mod, after having been exposed to the better scale and gamaeplay of better suited games, like UT3, Crysis, GRAW, or COD4. If RS launched a mod for a game platform where the player scale, maps, and other environemental factors made it fit like a latex glove, then I'd put down a few bucks for it, after trying a demo with a few guns and gore effects. Mmmm, blood. I'm suddenly thirsty...

I'd buy it, if it has new content and a system to create your own weapon, that'd be kickass.

That would be unnecessary, the tools to make a weapon are already available.

I sure would've bought it.

for €15...

Maybe more because this is a really good mod.
Yet, it is a mod, not a full on game.

Normally expansions aren't as expensive as full games.

When I talk about expansion packs, I was specifically meaning something like Roller Coaster Tycoon's several expansion packs. I got one of them (Loopy Landscapes), and decided to never buy another expansion pack to a game. This is what I mean by the expansion pack: the ones that barely mod the gameplay and add maybe 4 levels, and cost you about 1/2 the orig game's price (or something like that)!

About sequels that I dislike: the games that are literally the same game (same place almost literally, but now wih some extra objectives in there. Examples are hard to come across, but there are a few that I've seen...). Games like HL to HL2 aren't fitting of my category, and you know it. It's obvious the devs had a finished game, and then made another game based on the same plot and storyline, but now were in completely different places (Black Mesa to City 17 and the area around). What I didn't like was the HL2 extra episodes... that may not be laziness, but it simply shouldn't really be released in such short 1/3s of the game. I simply dislike the idea and think a game should be released in full, and not in parts, even as well done as the episodes were.

The point of the episodes was to be able to release chapters of the story in fairly short intervals at a time, rather than being left at a cliffhanger and waiting an extra couple of years to find out more.

I have to say though, that I kinda expected quicker releases for this episodic method.
As for stuff like Roller Coaster Tycoon and Sims, I can understand that. Pretty dumb. The first couple of expansions I could understand for Sims, but then they just kept shoveling out the releases. Same with Sims 2, only then they deliberately left out content specifically so they could release neigh identical expansions to the original game. And then they just keep shoveling the expansions out...

It almost seems like they are taking the normal dev time of a full game per episode, doesn't it? Or at least normal dev time of like... EA for (semi-horrid) example.

True, but I think following that idea... that would mean Duke Nukem Forever would be literally the one game to leave your mind in pure awe. Of course, there's a limit.

But seriously, I've been one to dislike expansion packs since the days of crappy EPs done for RCT...

Don't judge every expansion pack based on isolated cases. Just like regular games, many different developers create them and put their own touches in. You would for example not automatically hate FEAR because you disliked HalfLife 2. Well, unless you hate first person shooters as a whole...

Anyway, my point is; if you like a game and an expansion is released for it, do some research to see if the price is fair compared to the size of the package. If it is, then go for it. If it is not, then wait for pricedrops. That's what I do. Though in rare cases I like a game so much that I even skip research and just buy the expansions on release day. I did that with the two FEAR expansion packs, and I do not regret it.
