Hello Really enjoying Ballistic weapons 1.6. Thought I had a bug, but from reading some other posts it seems these are modifications to the rail gun in 1.6. What's up with the thermal rail gun scope? Why do both vehicles & players shine like a million watt globe when this mode is switched on ? Shooting through objects seems to be completely disabled. I'm lucky enough to have a machine that can play UT2004 with maxed out settings and 4xAA 8xAF (ATI Radeon X800Pro which took quite a while to save up for, ancient now though). This mod changed that. I have found reducing texture quality has the biggest impact on performance. Maybe a little more optimising needed ? Memory leaks ? Interestingly, turning off the AA & AF did not impact a great deal on performance. I have also found "boxes" around some blood effects when playing ONS maps. This is more prevalent if texture level setting is changed while in game. This mod is very clever, and the weapons are brilliant, just a little suprised at the uselessness of the thermal scope. I'll keep the rest of the post for the suggestions area. Thanks |

It is perfectly normal that you think video cards affect the performance of UT2004, but that is actually incorrect. The reason you don´t see much difference is because the game depends a lot more on the processor. It made close to no difference when I went from 64 Mb Geforce 2 MX to 256 Mb GeforceFX 5700 LE, but when I upgraded 1.2 Ghz AMD Athlon to 2.8 Ghz P4, the difference was so big that my eyes nearly rolled out of my eyesockets.
I´m talking about going from 800 x 600 Medium with few slowdowns, to 1024 x 768 max settings with no slowdowns at all, no AA/AF/VSynch though. I haven´t tested the Railgun thermal scope yet so I can´t judge that. :/ And about those boxes, I think that is an unfixable engine bug. I see those weird gfx errors with anything that leaves decals on a terrain. Post edited by: bjossi, at: 2006/03/19 02:52 |

That does make sense and I have read similar topics. I have a P3.2Ghz and found I could not max out UT when I had a radeon 9800 SE, without severe HD access and long pauses. Going from 512mb to a GIG of RAM & the X800 Pro meant I could crank it up with 20 Bots. Don't get me wrong, I still get good performace. I also accept that the newer AMD chips are giving better results when running these games. I'm no expert (did you guess, lol), but I suppose all those blood effects and recoil calculations are giving the pentium a hell of a lot more to do. Cheers |

I have a slower card than the Radeon 9800, plus a slower processor (2.8 Ghz) but I can still play BW maxed out on high resolutions with 50 FPS average. And decals everywhere don´t seem to create lag either. The lag may not be the game itself. And yes, AMD64 are much better for games than Intel. Also, Intels are very expensive compared to AMD. I´m soon getting an AMD64 X2 3800+ 1200FSB, that should be more than enough to run 1600 x 1200, max settings. ![]() Post edited by: bjossi, at: 2006/03/19 03:29 |
