This new release. I played it yesterday. I'm going to completely honest. I was underwhelmed to say the least, this is the first time i've been dissapointed with runestorm.

Although the damage system for the new cars is great, the steering is crap and the upgrade system is a waste of time. the custom paint-job is cool but once again, a waste of time because that car ain't gonna be going far.

What surprised me more was when i bought "Juggernought" heavy armour and nothing happened to the car. I was atleast expecting come indication like some little armour plates or something.

Runestorm have always produced high-quailty weapons and mods, but i feel that this time, they may have biten more than they could chew.

after downloading it, i too kinda feel the same.
mostly the car upgrade. i kinda sympathize with you on the armor thing. i was kinda expecting something like Twisted metal or Full auto style weapon system on the cars.
but i still have my faith in RS.
it took me 20 minuets for the Roadrage game to load.
but it plays smoothly though.

Personally I was more surprised (by the car mod) than disappointed, but only because for me the disappointment started a lot earlier, with the first release. Basically, most of what I liked in BW isn't present in the Crucible, and the mod as a whole went in a completely different direction than I had hoped (and suggested). Ok, it's their game and they can make it any way they want, but you can't expect people who liked BW to automatically like Crucible, as they're really 2 completely different mods. It's a bit like UT99/UT2K4 vs UT2K3/UT3; the latter may have fancier graphics etc., but the former simply were more fun.

Anyway, regarding this particular release: it might have been better to focus [scant resources] on one or two original gametypes than adding 10 of them, most of which are essentially filler. Well, among other things... But since creative input & constructive criticism aren't really appreciated, I'll leave it at that.

On a more positive note, I do like the destructible cars, naked angel statues, and Gargoyle model. Also the temple looks great, though gameplay/layout could have been better. There's plenty of good stuff in this mod, but there's also a lot more that could have been done with such a cool, timeless theme (Heaven vs Hell). Imo.

Yeah, i was a little underwhelmed by the crucible as a whole but i still had a lot of faith in them back then, i'm afriad to say but i'm starting to lose it now. The character models are good though. for an up side.

well, I'm sure the devs will take note of the feedback.

I do know, this is a beta release, so I'm sure we will see some changes and improvements along the way

Sorry for the lack of armour when Juggernaught. Time ran out on us.. We intend to expand on what we have started a great deal... There were not alot of options for us in Phase 4. Trying to see how to make vehicles, take a crack at maps, and trying to put it all into a mod. We only had a few months..

I don't "expect" anyone who liked BW to like the Crucible. I'm very glad for those who support RS and our work, BW and now. It seems we've been pegged as the "BW guys". BW was cool, we liked it. But we needed to move forward. We needed to win at the MSUC. We needed to work on next-gen content. If we wanna get anywhere in this industry, we've gotta go out on a limb, take a risk every now and then. Most of all, we have to do what we like

It's an early version. If you're displeased, i can't do anything about it. I'll take feedback and CC, but i'm not gonna do something i'm not happy with We have big plans, i hope we can get them all done everntually. Perhaps we'll get some more team members after this competition as well. It just sucks tryign to work on big content with f**king dial-up! Road-Rage does seem incomplete at the moment. But we're working on getting it to be how we envisioned.

You'll all just have to wait and sse how the Crucible ends up. Maybe you like it, maybe you hate it and send us death threats, whatever

I enjoy the Crucible - it's a fun mod to play. It's very different from Ballistic though, so it's bound to get a lot of flak from the community that mainly came here for the tactical gameplay of the original.


I still hope we'll see a full fledged supported version of Ballistic Weapons in UT3 one day. If not to retain the current Ballistic community, then to reignite the fame generated by the original. You guys took a risk and went out on a limb for that unique mod for UT2003/4 and it turned out wonderfully. It got you guys massive recognition, which is why people often call you the BW Devs.

I bet another realistic mod of that scale would end up very successful.

Maps can/could best be outsourced, like you did with the Gargoyle. Saves a lot of time, and they'll probably be better, too.

Ah but that's the problem; the Crucible looks next gen, just like UT3 looks next gen, but so far I haven't really seen anything that's particularly new or revolutionary. Functionality & innovation wise, it's a step backwards from BW. It plays like a game from 1999, not 2009. And yes, I know it's just a beta, and more stuff will be added later etc., but you already mentioned right at the start that all sorts of features, like BW's dismemberment system, won't be added, let alone taken to the next level (live dismemberment, advanced locational damage). Hell, not even something as basic as bullet penetration is a sure thing... That's not exactly what I expected when you talked about creating a game that features 'absolutely brutal combat & gore', or something along those lines.



If you want to go commercial, others must like it also.



You're forgetting something very important (which, ironically was one of the things that BW such a good mod): options. You CAN make a game that we're BOTH happy with -- that a lot of people are happy with-- by adding in plenty of config and customization options. Don't like bloodloss or dismemberment? Fine, turn them off. Don't like sci-fi weapons or health regen? Ditto! But don't exclude features altogether because some people might not like them. If you really want to go out on a limb and make something revolutionary, make a completely modular game that can be played in potentially hundreds of ways, from oldskool to next gen, from kid friendly to hardcore adult, by simply enabling or disabling options & features. The ultimate custom game. Kinda how UT99 was, only better.

Well I was quite pleased with BW, and the custom UT3 models. I'm not expecting or asking for anything absurd, and I know for a fact that if some of my ideas had been implemented (it's a bit too late for that now, unfortunately), the Crucible would have been a better mod, and eventually game. But ok, whatever. Maybe, if I can someday afford it (unlikely, but who knows), I'll hire a bunch of guys and show you what could have been.

We made BW already, so we don't need to make it again. If you want to play it, there it is, go nuts

Also, remember this: WE WANT TO ADD TONS OF FEATURES TO THE CRUCIBLE. But we NEED to get the basics done and correct first. I will not be elaborating on what else, or what not else, because i really don't
know waht we'll be able to finish in time

If you remember the first version of BW, you'll recall it had less tha nthe Crucible did

As for inclduign all the features and options: Somewhere along the line, you have to MAKE them.. You can't jsut put options in for features that don't exist. Try making all the features you want, see how long it takes

The Crucible will eventually have the same sismemberment as BW

Bottom line: We want to add as many things as possible. It only a question of time. If you think the only obstacle is our "dumbed down linear thinking", you're mistaken..

BTW, you could post a list here of everything you think the Crucible needs. We can at least assess that

SB is right, Ballistic Weapons grew massively over the course of years.
I remember playing the first release, and then the all mighty gold version release, so much changed in the course of development. All of the options, mutators, and configuration didnt come at once.

I dont have UT3(No mac version still yet...) but i'm sure The crucible will grow over time and mature just as Ballistic Weapons did. I will say that even the first few BW releases had me in awe.

1. More guns, lots of guns.

2. Different weapon sets of the different factions

3. Better bullet graphic things, I don't like the current one which is the sniper one if i'm correct.

4. Better recoil system, Current one works, but could be much better.

5. Iron-sights.

6. More awesomenss in the way of gore.

7. A melee swipe for the guns.

We need options for controlling how long bodies and blood decals stay.

I kinda like UT3's method fo cleaning up bodies by making them disappear client-side when they exit your field of view. Give a simple check-box to toggle between that and a limited life on corpses and I think that's all that's needed for a game as fast-paced as this.

As for blood, I liked BW's system. A check-box and a blood lifespan seemed to work perfectly for me. I just cranked up those lifespan values as high as my system could handle well and called it good. I think that most of the enjoyment from watching enemies blow up and seeing blood splattered on the wall is all in that first second and isn't worth a lot of resources after that unless specified by the user.

Gore is one of those things we want.

Sorry I been away a while, its because I been out drinking and smoking weed and completely forgot about dev work...

Anyway, it looks like lots of you are worried the Crucible is going to suck. Well, what you are looking at now is not the completed article and is lacking MANY of the cool features we want. This release is cross between an alpha and a beta version.
Yes, we want propper gore and MORE guns and iron sights, bullet penetration and more fancy little things on everything. They're all on the list.
The Crucible is intended to become the ultimate deathmatch platform. Kinda like what UT should be, but more solid, and with a different theme.
We want lots of options so you can customize it to play however you want.

Unfortunately, due to the MSUC, we have been handicapped with regards to 'when' to release and which features to work on.We had to try and make stuff we could enter and win with...
These limitations will start to fall away now.
If there were no MSUC or we had chosen not to enter it, we would not have released the Crucible in such an incomplete form and we would have focused more on different features.
The only difference this makes to you guys is that you get to see and play an early release of it, which is what you got here.
So the moral of the story, be patient (like you did during BW's development) and wait for propper releases for which we can control the date.

We could have chosen to not enter the MSUC, but it would have been pretty stoopid to throw away money that you really need that ensures the development of more stuff. If we had not won in the MSUC, who knows, there may not be anything at all to release and we might all be sitting in the street. We are still human and need to eat...

The conclusion is the Crucible is not done and WILL get much better. There will be much more to add for us to be satisfied with it and for it to match its origional vision. BUT, it will take time. Remember BW officially took 3 years to make (although lots of it had already been started as far back as 2003)
The first version of BW had very few of the features that everyone liked about BW. (It also took a lot less effort to make a gun back then)

I'm highly impressed with what RS has put out so far. Once I have enough money to buy a decent rig (that can run Crysis, U3, etc... on all the high settings really smoothly), Crucible's the first mod I'll be installing. Keep up the great work lads
I wonder...is a flak tank in the works? Or something similar to RA2:Yuris Revenge gatling tanks....

i hope we get to see shots the new blood n' gore feature sometime. (when its done that is)
i love setting the blood to stay forever. because there's nothing more sublime then the luscious hue of crimson decorating the walls, and with non humans, it looks a child's finger paint.
also, will the road rage mode feature new weapon dynamics? it would be cool if it was twisted metal style.

Well, it all comes down to the usuall things, like SB pointed out.. Time!

You simply never get enough TIME!, and you feel like crap when you have to cut back, and make-do..

But what else can one do, when you gotta make as much as possible in a short time frame..

All we can do is keep going, and add all the planned features as we go..
