@Beta-K: There are no iron-sights and no melee for every weapons

IF you look at the hints, they tell you how to do melee combos with the hammer. I fin'd it pretty damn damaging. Most often, 1 hit with a combo is a kill. The uppercut is especially nasty

Why is it always light machine guns? :( Why so little 12,7mm like our lovly ( but too weak (>,<) ) gun in BW?

About the weapons in general, isn't hte poly count a bit too high? They seem so incredibly detailed.

Also isn't it a real hell to UV-map them?

That is a bad thing?

Uhm you don't know poly count is something you must care about when making any 3d graphics in games?

loads faster then the UT3 Weapons, in fact they render themselves faster then Character hands and i experience less slowdowns with Crucible.

I do. And Drake underlined what I had in mind; polycount itself is pretty much irrelevant up to a certain point, which Runestorm obviously haven't reached. As long as content stays within the lines set by the engine in terms of detail, it should run just fine for computers meeting the sys. requirements.

This is evident in many older games when they have to render high definition content made by fans, the performance will be much, much worse than in newer games rendering similarly detailed content.

im going to share my thoughts with the crucible Weapons.

1. The Raven: a very solid Pistol, looks better then the Enforcer. (I liked the Enforcer but the side magazine kinda ruins it)
i think the Secondary function could be Iron sights or the Gangsta firing with a higher rate of fire with a loss of accuracy.

2. Basilisk: the Result of Half-life's shotgun going through Runstorms's Awesome Machine. not much to say other then that its a very solid weapon.

3. The Reaper AR: i think its the most creative rifle design i have ever seen in a PC shooter. and the ammo counter looks much better then the soulless static on the M50. if it only had a Grenade Launcher, otherwise, it fells like a (Very Awesome) Halo 3 assault rifle. the Primary fire should be a 5 shot burst to differentiate from the trident. and Secondary should be Full auto, or Better yet, a GL .

4. the Trident: Also a weapon design i haven't really seen in a FPS game, a triple barred machine gun. one of my personal favorites. (Seems a little too accurate for a Rotary LMG but whatever)

5. Scarab grenade: Just like the Pineapple, but harder to use. the secondary Cook function is defiantly more useful then the use special key used in BW.

6. the Hydra: they don't do weapons like this anymore, a rocket launcher with 6 launch tubes. and the neat little autoloader for the rampager on the go.

7. the Gryphon Sniper: your basic run of the mill sniper. not much to say other then its reliability.

can we expect to see more weapons in the future? (and also Custom Crosshairs?)

I believe there are some more weapons planned, but there probably won't be as many weapons as BW has in the end.

Especially considering the amount of hours that goes into just one gun.

Well, there are some weapons which I hope that get made:
-flamethrower
-Heallvened Thor LG.
-Toxic grenade
-an AR with grenade launcher.
-a double barreled shotgun? perhaps break-open?

I think the effects are a little too much. I mean the guns are supposed to fire bullets but they looks like they're firing small bolts of lightning or something. Maybe if you changed the tracer color to gray they'd look a little more... ballistic.

EDIT: but the hammer is AWESOME

They need to make a sword as a weapon that one of the players models have on his back.

I'd like to see a range of weapons for the evil side of thi fight, so another pistol, rifle, shotgun but with differernt stats and stuff!

A heaven revolver would be kickass!

I want iron sights. Since most of the guns dont have a secondry this would make sense. well.. In my opinion anyway.

@Kein: We obviously made the weapons of an appropriate detail. Mines not slow, i don't think anyone elses is slow.. As for UV maps, they kinda were nasty. Same goes for texturing in that jungle! We had to challenge ourselves to seperate them from every other gun out there.

And once again i will say to everyone; This is a FIRST version! Chances are that more interesting things will come later. We can't do everything at once! You'll just have to stay tuned to see how the Crucible develops

PS: The Hydra has the highest poly-count at 28k+
At least 15 million polygons went into the HD for the Hydra as well. It's a good thing that you never see that amount of poly's in the game

Yeah, though we will see those kind of polycounts at some point in the future (not for UT3 of course), assuming voxel rendering won't replace polygonal.

With all these details the texture sizes must be pretty big doesn't they? :S Otherwise you looks pixels on all the details right? Would you like to show an uv render?

How do you work with so high polymodels? I can't imagine you make these things in a sculpting program where you have no precision and very limited topology tools. :S How can you run 15M polygons in max?

28K in game is more than I have ever heard of before. :S In school we had like 3K budget on a vehicle. How high is the other weapons and models in UT3?



I wonder abou all this voxel ideas. :S What's their real advantage? Is it just the boolean friendly thing they have? Voxel models must have so high resolution if to not look boxy you know. Much higher than polygons if you can compare it. I heard among the biggest problems with voxels is making shadows of them in real time.

I wonder how you tetxure voxel models. :S

Advantage of voxels is detail. For example they can form smoother/rounder objects than we could dream about with polygons.

But when it comes to performance and usage (like texturing), I have no idea how they work. Wikipedia could probably help us out.

Uhm you need a lot of little cubes to make something look smooth. Much more than with polygons. With voxels you can't make an angled surface smooth. Which means you need a hell lof of those little cubes to fool the eye. I don't see how this would ever be better than polygons.

My guess is that the answer lies in the mathematics of the rendering. One has to look at different ideas from more angles than just the visual appearance, which is very exaggerated in that picture by the way.

The only place I know where voxels are better than polygons is when you have no limit on resolution. Since then you don't have to worry about topology when shaping things.

I noticed that the bullet tracer effects are all just the sniper rifle effect. I assumed that in the hurry to get Crucible our, RS put that in as a place holder to be replaced with somethign better down the line.

it feels like im shooting Bolter rounds.

I hate the tracers atm im sorry to say. Maybe if you faded them abit and colour coded them to each wep!

About voxels and shit: I think the game "Blood" had them.. At least some of the pickups.. To handle such high poly counts is really not that complicated Just hide the objects you're not working on and export them for ray-tracing once you're done. The likelyhood of ever seeing all those polygons at once is very slim

Savior btw, had many poly's. the 3rd SHoPad had over 30 million. Poly counts for HD mean very little now. You're not very limited by the PC. Just gotta figure out a few techniques and everything is good

Maybe we can send a UV sheet. DC does a very good job of maximising the entire sheet. Empty space in there is hard to find THe Hydra had a good sheet, lots of big parts

Say, SB. will we see Custom crosshairs and Weapon Icons on the HUD? it's confusing to see only Sniper rifles on the weapon Inventory bar.

As far as i know.. The weapon bar is a little worse than crosshairs.. crosshairs seem easy..

But to change the weapon bar you need to create an entirely new UI i think.. But rest assured all will be considered..

As for Poly counts.. I used to worry about that stuff, but it's all in the technique, and the only thing you need to worry about when it comes to poly counts, is the final product..
