Hello there, this is my first time on the fourms and playing Crucible, and I have to tell you, this is a wonderful mod for UT3. I have had a couple of problems though:

1) Some of the aspects of the game doesn't show the details, they are just all Green. They all work correctly though, just doesn't have the looks.

2) Sometimes I try to get into a match, the program shuts down automaticaly.

Both of these problems might be because of my ancient computer. Soon I will be getting a new one, so if the problem isn't fixed before hand, I'll see if it is my computer. Thanks for the wonderful mod! Keep up the good work!

what are your computer specs?

Honestly, I have no idea what the specs are. This used to be my big brother's computer before it got a virus. The virus got fixed though, and he already had a new computer, so I got this one. I wasn't told anything specific about it. I can tell you from looking on the outside of the computer that it is:

A Dell Dimension 4600, it has Windows XP, and has a Intel Inside Pentium 4 sticker on the outside... if that helps at all.

you can find out your specs through control panel just go to control panel and system it will tell you everything about your computer

I'm sorry if I'm sounding like an idiot right now, I'm not that computer-savy, but GPU? I have never heard of it. I have heard of CPU, but not GPU...

The GPU is the Graphics Processing Unit. It's also known as your video card. It might be Nvidia, ATI, or some other onboard one.

Yeah, the GPU, is the most advanced and costly part of any PC these days, and you'll have a hard time finding any games these days that will run without some graphics card...

Your computer is nowhere near powerful enough for comfortable play. Simple as that. I'm surprised the game runs at all, especially if the GPU is in line with the rest of your specs which date back to late 2003 standards.

Yes, if you buy a ridiculously overpriced brand like fx. Alienware, or simply buy a pre-built PC at all. When it comes to self-building, nowadays it is considerably cheaper to build a powerful gaming PC than it was several years ago.

Of course it is still possible to spend (read: waste) thousands of dollars to have the latest and greatest, but even if you settle for high-end instead of extreme-end, you could still stay below $1k, assuming you're doing an upgrade rather than a full new build (with monitor and whatnot).

I've seen the game run on machines like that.
It just seem to have a severe GPU (video card / graphics card / video adapter) problem.

If you are getting a newer machine than that, it should be plenty powerful as long as it has a good GPU.
I think the GPU is the most important piece of hardware for gaming, it certainly seems to make the most difference.
You don't have to get the best, most powerful, most expensive card. You can get very good value for money if you do a bit of research. The newest cards are always a tiny bit faster and several times the cost the one before them.
I believe a good tactic is to pick a GPU and build the machine around that...
Ram and CPU have a very big effect as well...

Wow... so many insights! O_O; Well, to tell you the truth, I'm quite surprised myself that my computer is still alive (Being that it has had a virus, and that it is so old). Like I said before, I'm not computer-savy, so my question would be: What GPU to get? I don't have enough time to look them up today... or tomorrow for that matter... so I can look them up later (I hope). Thanks for all the help!

Personally I think you would be better off buying a new PC than upgrading just the GPU. One thing to note is that the GPU depends on other hardware to work at full power, a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 is not even remotely close to being powerful enough for keeping a modern GPU busy. Plus another major limitation is that the motherboard of your system only has an AGP bus, the standard of recent years has been PCI-Express and its revisions (2.0 is the newest afaik.). On top of that it is likely the power supply in your system would not be powerful enough to power a newer GPU.

So yeah, to avoid complicated jigsaw puzzle-like upgrades and hunting for ancient hardware on auction sites that is compatible with your current system, I would just save up for a brand new computer and spare yourself a LOT of headaches. Since you are not tech savvy it would be a bad idea to go the self-building route unless you knew of a cheap/free service or friends that could help you through the process of choosing what to buy, putting the parts together and setting up the software and stuff like that.

If you can afford a new PC, then you can buy a whole new one. Just make sure it has a good GPU.
If you can't afford a whole new PC, the more one learns, the more money you can save...

I can't imagine how much we would have had to pay people to build and maintain or machines and network if we didn't do it, ourselves. One thing I notice over the years is that modern PCs are much easier to put together than they used to be.

But if it can't run the Crucible then how? My computer has been used as a UT2004 server before, and even then people reported lag, despite it being new.

I'm upgrading the GPU, though, not the whole thing. As Bjossi said, it's not worth hunting through a load of other parts when you can buy a new PC, especially if it's old enough to have a Pentium processor. (No offense to the old guys, had one for years!) Luckily for me, though, I already have a 1000W PSU and a couple of spare PCI-E slots, so 400 series here I come...

Well it should work as a server, since it never has to render anything.

Obviously I don't get how this works, then... if it doesn't need to render stuff, then why are most server computers insanely fast with about 16 GB RAM and a compulsory 64-bit OS?

It doesn't need a fancy GFX card. It does still have to send alot of information to all clients, preferably with the least lag possible

A fast CPU and connection are the most important parts of the server i believe.

CPU seems ok,maybe 1 or 2 more gigs of ram would allow maybe 32 man server?? I am not sure about server reqs. Tried to google it, odd the info you can't really find, found 1 forum post & that CPU/ram seems to be ok.

RAM doesn't matter much at all for servers that dont render anything(Dedicated servers), RAM is used for caching textures and models, mainly for graphics..

The two things a server needs: A decent-ish CPU, and a fast connection, both the network cards/modems, the cable, the HUB and anywhere the cable is connected to something with a limiter, the clients also need fast network cards or modems and cable to recieve things at a decent rate...

So it's doesn't depend so much on the server as much as the entire network...
