About 1118 polygons. Could be reduced a little though in last finnish. All 4-sided expect obvious sharp points like the teeth.

Of coures inpspired from Warhammer 40 000. I wanted to make my own version. I took away the first part of the covering over the blade so that the weapon could be used a little for stabs too. ;) Over all length 110cm. Grip about 15cm. If anyone would feel for coding and animating this weapon and add to BW feel free when I'm ready with the model and texture.

Took a bit work to make the theeth and chain in proper size and not making the whole thing too big. The blade must be thick enough for the teeth to go all round. (o,o)

I don't think I'm finnished with it.

Gotta say I like it, except for the chain. Not terribly crazy about that. It really wouldn't work like how you got it. The teeth might puncture the target, but then would throw the saw upwards with the spinning of the chain, possibly throwing it into your face. It wouldn't do much cutting.

First off, the teeth are too long. This will result in it catching a lot of stuff. And they would also be more likely to break too.

Second, the teeth are pointy, but don't seem to actually have an edge. This means that the teeth catching a lot of stuff won't actually cut through that stuff, so the teeth will simply just try and move with it, which in turn will throw the saw with the movement of the teeth.

What you should do, at least in my opinion, is shorten the teeth, give them an edge on the side that they cut with, and actually, try and give them more of the look of teeth on a circular saw if you want it to look a bit more effective.

That's just my opinion though.

Man, now I really need to work on my version of a chainsword.

I think the satisfaction of having the lenght of the teeth and all in a game weights more than it's need for realism. ;}

All i care about is the unrealistic amount of GORE! I don't care if a pointy stick that you attack with them, aslong as their body explodes i'm happy :D

Here is a modified one to the left. Smaller teeth meaning thinner shape as well. No real work in this one. Just moving and scaling some parts. For you to compared.

When I made the first weapon I knew that the teeth were larger than most such weapons, I wanted it to have more noticable teeth. Also the teeth shape is just a detail no problem to fix I just havn't thought of it.

While i agree with Xavs points, i can not deny that that your first version looked more baddass.

I like V2 better myself... the sword looks to be much less in the weight department now, so it's probably be somethig you could carry around actually without getting tired nearly as fast!

I like it better with smaller teeth, but I'm still not real crazy about the triangle teeth.

Post subject:  Re: Chainy swordy

A thing about nr2 is that it looks so lighter yes, making it feel easier to use. But still I like the bigger "thougher" shape of nr1.

A little note of actually realism on the long teeth. :P Compard to a chainsaw the blade is thicker and therefore it feels like the teeth must clear a clear way before the blade can be pushed down to the object cutted. Too short means so little piercing effect. I have always felt that with chainswords from wh40k etc. The reason why the blades are thicker chainsaws is simply that the blade inside which the chain goes along should be protected by outer plates if it is to be a weapon I feel.

Xavius spoke on shape of teeth. I made a few examples with the angle interval of: 0, 20, 45 and 60. I still think that the first one looks more brutal, simple and bulky. The weapon is a fairly bulky thing designed for strong combatants.

Actualy the 4th version with the teet hat the angle looks really bad ass, that thing looks like its ready to tear... MAybe add little jagged hooks or somethign at the end of each blade and that'll spell out ripping your body apart in no time

Post subject:  Re: Chainy swordy

I like the last one the most, seems the most practical one there, assuming that they are actually blades and not spikes now (can't tell from the current angle), the longer side has to be razor sharp, but the other side could have a little width for seperating ths flesh (or metal if its a robot)

I like number 3, it's not too much angle, and would allow things to get caught between the teeth and rip them to shreds there easily.

I think it should have fish hooks dangiing off it, and when you walk, they sway around

Here is yet another version of teeth for you to compare and say your taste. Here every second teeth is smaller than the others.

Post subject:  Re: Chainy swordy

Good design move. The shorter teeth would give the blade more of a chance to bite into what its cutting, while preventing it from getting caught, same reason why wood cutting chains have links with no teeth on them.

I like the bottom left one most, but the smaller teeth are angled a bit too much, they're almost touching the bigger teeth, so they wouldn't really be able to bite into what they're cutting very efficiently.

Looking much better though! :)

i like the second one on the left from the top

Post subject:  Re: Chainy swordy

I myself like the left-2 best. Maybe the teeth could have 30 instead of 20 angle. All teeth on the same weapon has same angle. Would be a little tiresom to give the bigger different angle from the smaller. :ugeek:

But you poeple like the multi sized better I see. Btw the thing next to the grip is the battery placed inside it, used as power source rather than gasoline like in chainsaws. In real life I doubt a battery of that size would be enough to drive a chainsaw though.

I'll be honest, I still like the uniform length number 3 chain.

[color=#0040FF]Nice with all replies and oppinions. To be honest I feel like the teeth are too small for the width of the sword. :?

But unless I'm to cheat with realism like some chainsword models I have seen it has to be that thick if the teeth are supposed to be able to go inside the back of the sword. I want to keep it ralistic. Giving the teeth mixed lenght makes them look overall shorter I feel. :|

fourth chainsaw three qaurters of the length of the big ones (the teeth that is) and a bit wider would be about perfect. plus there are some verycool plastic models out there to get examples from.

Any one here ever play Phantasy Star?
Well what I'm getting to is that there is a special Sword with a chain saw blade.
But its not a normal sword, its a two-handed long sword, It's like 6-10 feet long,
I know that seems long for BW, but it could be counter weighed by the fact that
it's two-handed so swings slower, but has a wider swing arc.
