Someone sounds bitter...

I don't understand this preoccupation with graphics. I found them completely reasonable, nothing to write home about, but not completely repulsive as you seem to think. And I really didn't care, since I was having so much fun with it.

the hell with UT's graphics!! i hate 2k3-2k4 and U2 cause the gameplay and story just plain sucked!! the style of the game sucked.. the maps sucked.. the sounds sucked.. the characters sucked.. the weapons really, really, really sucked!!

Unreal 1 and UT99 were excellent.. the engine, I guess, is always adequate to handle the gameplay.. only problem ever seems to be the design.. Everyone tries to slap together the best looking things they can, and deal with gameplay and design as an after-thought.. some however might be fine with after-thought gameplay

We still play Q3, HL, Doom1, StarCraft, etc.. its not about graphics!!

Well I never played the original UT, but UT2k3/4 seemed just fine to me.

Of course I thought the same thing with Deus Ex 2. I loved every minute of it until until I played through the original. Now it just pisses me off

When I read the last few words of your post, I knew that SB had replied below with harsh words.
He speaks the holy truth by the way. If Epic had worked much longer on UT2003 they might have come up with a fantastic game and skip UT2004 altogether. I imagine UT3 will be the true sequel to UT in terms of quality and story.

But I do think SB is too harsh about Unreal 2, especially in terms of sounds. Because U2 has some of the best weapon sound effects I have heard. It is not about bass only for me, what matters is the feel, and the devs nailed that to the wall with weapons like the assault rifle, which by the way is a top notch weapon in every way imaginable.

But I stand by my claim. If Ut2004 is crap then it is good crap, I still have fun with it and its graphics are fine by me. If it really is that bad, not me nor you or anyone else would still be playing it let alone modding it. But we all do.

I could easily agree with Shadowblade, the game certanly could have been better. But with that attitude, nothing will ever be better (no, not even UT3 for you)

I could say more but if you will excuse me Im going to play some good crap, blast crap player models into oblivion, duck and dive incoming rockets with crap player moves and animations. Run over countless millions with crap Manta physics and strew their crap looking gibs across the battlefield and just plain have some craptacular good gun slinging fun. I haven't played UT2004 in at least a year, but I play BW every now and then.

about U2.. i finished it in under a day.. it was like,, hmm that was. uhh.. mm.. average at best.. no mulitiplayer?!! wtf.. the idiotic story.. the moronic Skaarj.. the constant radio twittering, which annihilated any potential atmoshpere of fear, or survival in an alien environment.. and the weapons were nothing great to speak of.. the Assault rifle, was one of my worst.. the sounds was like air escaping something.. the impact sounds were louder.. at least the sounds accurately demonstrated the weakness of the weapon at least the big pistol was OK-ish.. never any ammo for it though..

in the end, it didnt live up to its glorious hype.. and there was never any mention of no MP.. there was nothing "unreal" about it, and certainly not worth the R400 ($60) i payed for it... it sits on my shelf abandoned now.. wasting shelf space.. it just one of those things in life that really gets to you

It shoots tiny bullets, does very little damage; what sound did you expect?

U2 has an assault peashooter too? What is it with assault rifles being weak and piddly in almost EVERY FPS?

Red faction AS = powerful, horribly innacurate

Halo AS= weak, semi-innacurate (you could burst fire for better accuracy)

UT2004 AS = weak, horribly innacurate

Half life AS = semi-weak, innacurate

Quake 3 AS= very weak, accurate

and now U2 AS = weak

I miss the assault rifle from 007 Goldeneye, that was a gun you really assault people with.

The Red Faction AR is very accurate and powerful if you use primary fire. Using secondary fire is meant for close-up kills I think, it is way too inaccurate for even medium-range...

The primary fire was 80% more accurate although noone used it.

Back during my Red Faction days I was using dialup modem, so did many others. Since the primary fire was just a burst it was pretty hard to hit anyone with it.
