An interesting discussion you've got here I happen to speak English, French, German and my native language is Russian.

French is closer to English and German is very similar to Russian, though I hate French and love English.

French emerged directly from Latin some centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire; Latin, which I also kinda speak (mostly read), is a highly synthetical language with developed declension of nouns, gender system, etc. etc., and French retains only a tiny bit of this heritage; it is mostly a disfigured mockery of Latin with no declension, misshapen words, underdeveloped tense system simpler but worse than that one in Latin, and an orthography that hasn't been updated since the XVth century.

For example, the Latin word "APICULA", meaning 'a bee', has come to be "ABEILLE" in French, pronounced "abey", while "AUGUSTUS", the Latin word for 'August', in French became "AOUT", pronounced just "oo".

The worst thing is that French still retains some traces of the Latin pronominal and case system, which results in wierd pronoun paradigms like "il/le/lui" or "elle/la/lui" meaning something like I/me or he/him in English, but their usage in French is far more complicated and lacks any logics. Once those were the nominative, the accusative and the dative cases of nouns in Latin, but since the Latin noun declension system went belly up in Old French circa VII-IX centuries A.D. those came to be just some perverted pronoun and noun forms which no longer have any decent grammatical ground.

Gender in French is a formal category expressed mostly by the article and some other minor means but it doesn't make more sense than the (mostly atrophied if not already dead) gender system of English.

From the point of grammar and syntax, French is very close to English, the only BIG difference being that English doesn't have that lot of redundant grammatical atavisms inherited from the ancestor language. So English is a pleasure to speak IMO and French is a torture.

BTW, I studied Old English for three years and it's nothing like modern English. It's very close grammatically to modern Russian and German, though. There are noun cases in Old English, similar to German ones, and a very developed morphology. It's totally incomprehensible to modern English speakers. I have to admit however that it's great that English dropped all the redundant features of its ancestor in the course of its development. If something is no longer needed, it has to go rather than stay and confuse the speakers.

German is a very logical language. Its grammar, syntax and morphology are extremely complicated, but the whole system is so straight that actually all these peculiarities help you to build up sentences and speak extremely precisely. German is way more sophisticated than English or French, but strangely enough, it's easier to learn. I also love the fact that German has a noun case system just like in Russian

And my native Russian, that's a very complicated, weird language with very long words and obscure meanings. It's highly idiomatic like all the Slavic languages and it usually takes five or ten words to build up the most primitive sentence. Considering that the word order in Russian is almost completely free (if such a thing ever existed in Russian), you are sure not to catch the meaning even if you are a Russian yourself. E.g. when your mom asks you if you'd like a cup of coffee and you want to say no, this phrase in Russian will sound like "da net navernoye" which literally translates as... "yes no probably", where "yes" is meant to emphasize "no" and "probably" stands for a high probablility, that is "for sure". But the same group of words, if used in another context, will mean exactly "yes, no, probably", i.e. three words with contradictive meanings that make no sense while used together.
