Also, back on topic, I think if we want people to notice us we should do something. Traffic seemed to go up when Sgt. Kelly released the bonus pack. Everyone's got great ideas for weapons and maps, pehaps those can be used. And when I get my PC back I'll finish off those 3rd person anims.

Perhaps our lack of steam is due to our lack of a clear goal? For example I can model guns but I can’t UV map, or animate to save my life. I could submit what I have to the community; however, I have not yet done so because I do not wish to hinder others in work I can’t help with.

Runestorm don't need to host anything, there are plenty of servers up.

He was meaning as in they won't be really developing the mod anymore, as they've moved on to their UT3 project, Crucible Weapons.

Ah, yes. That's a sad thing, as with a few changes (some of which I've managed to implement... others break stuff) this mod is totally done.

They just won $7000 in the Make Something Unreal Contest. I think this justifies dropping BW.

And who knows? Once they go commercial, the y might even make a full blown game with Ballistic Weapons in it!

I am a UT2004 purist. The reason I've played this game so long is because it beats the pants off any other game, both for its time and in terms of requirements of skill in its pure modes. I can't stand most other games simply because they don't require anything like the skill playing good UT2004 off pure hitscan does, and as such it's boring and frustrating to be killed by noobs who I'd own perfectly in this game.

UT3 comes under that heading for me. I played it and thought it was tripe. The reason UT3 didn't work is because all the people who whined about UT2004 rewarding skill properly or "being too haaard" didn't realise they were looking at UT99's gameplay with rose-tinted spectacles. Hence, UT3's copy of gameplay that was made up in 1999 failed. It is a sad thing that Runestorm have moved to UT3, because despite the absolutely mind-blowing quality of their work for that engine, the game they're using as a platform is an unplayed pile of tripe.

A professionally made BW would be nice though. The weapon concepts are unique enough on the whole to make for a good game. As long as sight raising speed becomes logical and light weapons can sight while retaining full movement speed, the gameplay should be fine.

Agreed with everything Azarael said. UT2004 is my favorite game of all time, beating out my second choice (C&C Generals) by a considerable margin. It's easily moddable, but hard enough to discourage noobs to make their own crappy maps. It's got an overwhelming amount of content even as a stock game, and the bots are actually pretty good. It saddens me too that most has moved onto UT3, because it's main advantage is better graphics. UT2004 is one of those EXTREMELY rare things-a perfect game.

Never was interested enough by stock UT2004 to consider playing it extensively (played stock UT3 a whole lot more than UT2004... was the only UT game where I actually beat the 'campaign' mode...), but you're missing the whole point of RuneStorm switching to Ut3. First off, the MSUC is held for UT3 mods (resulting in over $10,000 in winnings plus likely a LOT of publishers taking notice). Second off, how many copies of UT2004 have been bought in the last couple of years, before UT3 was even out?

The RuneStorm guys can't just keep making mods for free, they want to get into the business of making and selling video games.

And all that talk about the base gameplay for UT2004 vs. UT3 is completely irrelevant.

They aren't going to stick with just making weapon packs. They are making GAMES. They aren't going to base anything off the stock engine's base gameplay. When they make a game, they will be working off what plays good, feels solid, and interests the most people.

I hate to say it, but pleasing the small community of UT2004 purists isn't going to accomplish much for these guys.

But that is what this website here is exactly for. Those of us who still work on UT2004, continue to add new weapons (and eventually, upgrades and new features) to BW. This is why if any of you have the knowledge and skill to modify UT2004, you should do something about this dying game, make something spectacular, make something mediocre. Heck, just make something. The crop of UT2004 modders are pretty quickly moving on, so you might as well do something while there's still something to do.

I mean no disrespect to any party here, and what I say might not be 100% accurate, but you have to realize that RuneStorm is moving on, with or without you.

By the way, I'm not sure I would go as far as saying UT2004 was a perfect game, but it is a very nice platform for making you own personal perfect game. :p

I never thought UT3 could be considered as having a campaign. It was exactly the same as just playing with bots.

I've been trying to start working on another weapon model, but I don't see much point in making it for BW anymore. At this point I need to move on and make models that actually are well done... and built for better engines so they actually can get recognized for stuff. I don't intend on going the same path as RS, but I still have the idea of doing weapons design for my career, and I'm pretty sure that these models have helped me tremendously.

Since we're on the topic of vacations, on the 9th I'll be off to Italy until the 20th.

As far as I can tell, modelling complexity in newer engines is an intricate illusion. Lay off all the advanced graphical settings and the complexity of the weapon is not much greater than that of a BW weapon.

Yeah, but I'd like to start making things for stuff that hasn't come out yet. For instance, I am willing to say that Crysis 2 will probably have much higher detail on their weapons. If you look at the SCAR, you can see some obvious polys. Those will probably be fixed up and made smoother in the actual model since they can't fix that with illusions by bump maps or textures of other sorts.

UT3's campaign is simply Instant action with glorified cutscenes, it's one of the reasons that UT3 pisses me off, why did the drop the tournament mode? It's call Unreal tournament for a reason, just dropping was a big let down to me.

How is that any different from the other campaigns in the UT series?

Maybe I just didn't play them enough, but they sure felt like Instant Action after Instant Action to me (minus the kinda neat cutscenes). UT3 kinda had a story this time around, enough to keep me interested, though in the last third of the game it got pretty annoying, fighting whats her name only to have her escape so you can fight her again...
