Nice fanboy flamewar. Anyway the same problems had been confirmed with NVIDIA cards too, so i ask you who is really the one to blame ?

The fact, that the users need to deal with those kind of problems when the product description of RAGE explicitly says the software will work on PC platforms with strong enough Hardware, is to me a no-go and a scandal, further a reason to claim.

When i develop stuff and it wont run and behave as promised on the contracted platform of the customer, first the customer and then my chief knows who to blame and i know who probably has to drive a night shift.
And if there are problems with 3rd party elements, there are two ways: Contacting the 3rd party or develop a workaround/redesign. The whole business world works like that so that I'm always wondering why gamedevs and publishers are free of this business rules. Different measures for the same component - software ?

I think they should just say that there is no guarantee that it will work on 100% of systems, because it's probably quite close to impossible to be certain that it will run on the massive range of machines out there. They run all kinds of hardware and software; they're overclocked, they might have viruses, users might have fiddled with the wrong files, etc. They should just never guarantee it(if indeed they do).

Games back in the day were also quite finicky, but also far less complex technically.

Guaranteeing something works on the wide range of computer specs out there is like a medicine saying it will lessen a very specific problem in a part of the human brain and that it won't have any side effects, not bloody likely...

We are living in 2012 and not in 1993. See the realities guys. The ability to run a routine to check the hardware and compare it online with a database to get the fitting driver hacks for the particular setup can't be a problem nowadays. At least, not for a company like id Software and its publishers like bethesda softworks.

Its ridiculous ! Ingame of RAGE, you can't configure any shit, but on the other side you have to deal with driver hacks, need to install some fancy beta crap ?

To me its Customer unfriendly and INTEL/AMD didn't developed RAGE, no matter on how good or bad their API's might be. id Software and its publishers have by far enough enduser experience and the abilities to make acceptable solutions for their customers, but instead, they throw you into cold water telling you: Sorry pal's, the abilities to develop for INTEL/AMD cards aren't as good as we would have liked it. You may own new hardware to play the game or contact INTEL/AMD on how to make our product running. We've got your money anyway !

Well I agree that's shoddy work on Id's part, not adding proper support, they could do a lot better...

I'm merely reinforcing the fact that there are no guarantees, but they should do their best to ensure it works well on as wide a range as possible...

@Grum: I think there are worse problems in the industry than a game not working too well at launch (we have it now, runs perfectly). I'm guessing that the technical issues largely had to do with the simultaneous console development. Regarding the lack of graphics options; is that really necessary/a problem in this case? Would it have helped at all, as most of the issues seem to stem from MegaTexture(which would be impossible to disable)?

Could they have, should they have done better? Sure. Is it as bad as being stabbed? No. You're getting quite worked up over this (at least that's how it comes across).

Only thing I had to do to get it to work was disable my Catalyst AI thingy in GPU control panel. And there's sufficient .ini options to configure that anyone who actually wants to configure the graphics shouldn't have much of a problem.

Actually, the game were running on first attempt in my case.(AMD Radeon HD6400M)

A review on the game is already on its way an should be done tomorrow since i don't have time to finish it today.


This are just the things how i see them and not only the product RAGE has those issues which i see as a solvable problem.

About the graphic settings. I just wanted to point out, that on the one side, you have noob settings which even unexperienced users can handle, but on the other side you need to install hardware specific 3rd person software, which you even need to find on your own first.

Personally, i don't have a problem to handle this situation but others will have and that simply can't be the target of IT. Of course, Games are part of the IT as an entertainment product and form able medium which reach many users on the computer platforms nowadays.

And there are always things needed to be done everywhere everyday, so this can't be an argument. Its just a discussion killer but i'm done with my part anyway

Also, I don't wanted to offend anyone here or get worked up over particular things. I just wanted to contribute to the discussion that i see more the Gamedevs in charge in first pace, then the driver developers even if there stuffs could be done too. So don't get me wrong.

From what I gathered on the situation; iD Software, for developing/testing using hardware drivers that weren't even publicly released when the game was released officially. Both AMD and NVIDIA hurried their driver updates to support the game.

Thus: If your application depends on software updates that are only available to developers currently, don't release it until after said updates are available to the public.

Another good reason to be a patient person, buy the game a while after it's released, you get reviews, patches, fixes, drivers, etc....One would be glad to be behind 'current tech' when you look at it that way...

And even if you have bought the game upon release date and have the best PC, whats a short wait of even a month anyway?, you can play other games in the meantime, no need to make mountains out of molehills if you can help it...

I hate hacks in code. They create unexpected behavior and more special case scenarios that make trying to work on a program extra tedious. They are also usually undocumented and are very good at breaking things as the program expands. Unfortunately, sometimes they are unavoidable (usually when working with a system you can't change).

I don't think it's a very good idea at all to develop your game using different drivers to the public ones. I can only think they were under the understanding that the drivers would become public in time and we all know how time works in the game dev industry.

The reason many games are released in a buggy state is less to do with shoddy developers and more to do with publishers demanding ridiculous time frames. Most decisions are made by people who know nothing about gaming, engineering or art.
Games are unbelievably complex systems and they run on a variety of very complicated machines. Making them behave well is a very tall order that deserves a suitably advanced, supportive development environment. The majority are not made in such an ideal situation.

On another note, RAGE works perfectly on my machine. I'll keep my opinions of the actual game to another topic though.

Huh. I'm glad I never bought it. Though it worked just fine for me, and I had a sapphire radeon HD 5770.

This was only at the time of release, the game and drivers have been patched since.

And how were you able to attest that the game works fine on your system when you never bou- oooohh, I get it. Shame on you.

I'd like to assume it was a gift. Otherwise you are just about breaking one of the rules.

Agreed, publishers are a big reason why games often aren't as good as they should have been, or why they are buggy, or lack certain things that were promised...

I can't imagine many game developers not wanting the project to be the best it can be, and to have all the great things they planed for the game working perfectly, it's publishers that destroy the dreams of developers with strict time lines and meddling....

In Rage's case, my roommate bought a copy of it. He couldn't get it to work, so handed me the disc and said 'if this works for you, I'm punching you.'
