I really love the Ballistic Weapons mod (and Junkwars too), and I had a question. Where do you guys manage to find your awesome sound effects? I'm an indie game developer (nothing on the level of Unreal engine, mind you), and finding sound effects is the only thing currently giving me a problem. I've seen a lot of websites where you can buy royalty free sounds, but nothing I've found so far is on par with the quality I've seen in UT mods (especially BW). -OrcSlayer |

I actually disagree, the sound effects in this mod aren't even close to be of the same quality degree as weapons like in Quake 4 or HalfLife 2 and many other games, but they are still very well done for a free modification.

I'm not saying they're the best, but for a free mod they are really good. So obviously they didn't cost a fortune to make/get

That is a good point there.
I even think they improved the sound effects for the next release, so keep your eyes open wide for the download link in the future. And welcome to the forums by the way!

Two man mod team? I didn't realise that...very impressive. But still, does anyone have any idea where to get good sound fx like this on the cheap? |

Nope not a clue, plus to be honest i think RS will keep that secret cause them if they give it away to the public, well then every mod will use them and they won't be awesome sounds anymore, just regular sounds. I'd PM ShadowBlade about this if i were you, but i'm not so make your choice. |

I guess I'll do that...obviously they are some good base sounds that have been modified to fit the mod...I just for the life of me don't know where to find those for anything less than more money than I have... |

They are actually 4. Cyberax keeps the website up and running. ShadowBlade does some animating, modelling, skinning and mapping. DarkCarnivour does everything; coding, skinning, animating, mapping, etc. And a 4th guy, I can't remember what he is called, he handles mapping. But I can't for the life of me remember who made the sounds.

Ok, SB is the main sound dude (I think... )
The sounds are ALL ORGINAL ! There has been no sounds stolen, bought or borrowed from somewhere else...SB will jump in here
For interest sake, they record sounds (like them jumping on a bottle), then they use some software (like fruityloops) and come up with some amazing and excellent sounds! You would be amazed at how some of the sounds came about...maybe SB can indulge us with a few examples... |

Well, it is mainly a 2 man team. SB and DC (ShadowBlade & DarkCarnivour) are responsible for 99% of the work, from designs on paper right through to modeling and coding!! Cyberax (That's me!) is mainly responsible for the website, and then I give them a hard time behind the scenes to keep them on their toes and their project on track (it is their project), kinda like an annoying manager (but I'm not really their manager!). BE (BlackEagle) is busy learning maps and I suspect will contribute quite a bit down the line, once he gets going with the maps. We are 4 brothers (I'm the oldest, and actually a half-brother to the other 3!). I'm the technical one, and they're the game guru ones (although they do know how to put a PC together!)
cheap = Make them

hey everyone!! ok.. i dont wanna say to much.. we make basically ALL the sounds of everything.. the only base sounds i use (and heavily modify) are the firing sounds.. i cant for the life of me remember where i got them, and they are fairly lo-quality, but they do for now
when i get some cash, i'll try buy some CD's.. |

Who said our sounds are crap???!!! I've heard worse form so called proffesional games! They have no excuse though! Our old mic was a R25 (<$4) pos, but now we use a HQ stereo beast I made myself! We don't have a fancy studio with all the usual crap! Our "studio" is a back yard filled with god damned birds, chainsaw maniacs, cars, trains and the bigest highway in Africa right there! |

Me too, but most games developed do have fantastic gun sounds. I personally nominate the pulse rifle from HalfLife 2 as the gun with the most powerful sound effect ever made for a gun. When I set the volume of my Z-2200 high and hold down the mouse button, I can hear the pictures on the walls in my room dance and I feel like I'm constantly getting run over by a car as the sound pounds on my stomach again and again and again. If BW ever get this sort of sound effect going even if it was just one weapon, it'd be at least 4x more enjoyable to kill a bot.

I have no complaint about thecurrent BW sounds, I think they're awesome, with not much room for improvement. But yeah, there is some. Bjossi is right about the pulse rifle. The Magnum is actually better, but since it oesn't have the RoF of the pulse rifle, it doesn't blow your ears away the same |

The quality is there, but the power is missing. And as far as I know, guns make sure you hear them once fired... |

i know.. but we have some pretty crap audio equipment.. some cheap ass headphones, and etc.. i'm tweaking sounds for the next release, so hopefully you'll like em better.. when u guys get the beta, thne if it aint good enough, i can tweak some more

I am a bit biased though, since I'm an audioholic, I think music any less than 192 Kbps sounds bad. 256 Kbps and better is good. But I can understand if you guys don't have the equipment to make good audio, but everything can be done digitally if you have the knowledge.

oh yeah?? i mean our base sounds, are in the most disgusting quality imaginable, and were free (firing sounds) .. wot do u expect.. if i can get hold of some sample CD's, then i could do sounds like the big developers
i recorded like 15000 sounds.. and chopped em up to make em useable.. everything u can imagine really.. we use many of these recoreded soundsin our music to if u listen carefully to the music, u cna hear; gooses, our dog, chains, spades, and a few other things

Then you can buy some quality gear / sample CDs or whatever, and upgrade all the sounds with wicked bass n stuff. Just a thought! Weird! In a cool way.
