I bet they don't have too many mall raids in your places, do they? Thats where a gang of 20 to 50 go into a big public mall in the middle of the day and basically overpower any security. I see those on the news every two weeks, sometimes more.
The numbers say you're twice as likely to be murdered here than in Iraq!
Luckily, they haven't yet banned begging for mercy... !mistrust

Is that true? Thats just scary.

Yes it is!
I personaly come accross the aftermath of a "cash-inTransit" heist at least every two weeks on the roads I travel (fairly rural areas). Hijackings (mostly violent and include a shooting) occur at least 5-14 every week in the town areas I travel ( roughly 150Km in every direction).
The bad guys shoot first, don't bother asking questions...the cops are horribly underpaid and overworked and they do a good job, but they are horribly outnumbered and under resourced (well the few that are not corrupt anyway-but that's cause they are so miserably paid).

The town I live in (small community of about 700 - not including the townships and squatter areas), is patroled night and day by a private (armed) security company, and they keep the crime level down. It's actualy re-assurring when you see them sweeping your windows at night with their spot lights!! ~:(

I could quote the murder and rape stats for the country, but it's in the high thousands...theres something like a rape every 90 seconds somewhere in the country!!

Yes, our crime is high, and very violent.

BUT, you learn to live with it, and adjust your life style accordingly...

Having just been to London recently, for a very fast, short BRILLIANT experience, I can honestly say, I would still live in South Africa. I would like to travel more, and am studying to be in a position where my company sends me for business all over, but at the end of the day, our life style is very relaxed and enjoyable.

For example, I work from 7:30am to 4pm, the sun is shining more than it rains during the year. My winter temperature averages 20 celcius.
I am within a 20min drive of the sea. I am within a 30min drive to the BEST game reserves in the country (I am guaranteed of seeing at least 3 of the big 5 animals {Rhino, Elephant, Buffalo, occasionly lion} everytime I go there) in the wild bush. I am within 1.5 hours drive of some of the best coastline in the world (totaly 4x4 country so not many people). I am within an hours drive of the second highest natural dunes in the world. I am 2 hours drive from Mozambique with it's stunning beaches and coastline (and not visited by many people).
I am within 3 hours drive of the most spectacular mountains this country has to offer. I am 4 hours drive from the highest pub in africa, and a further hours drive and hike to the second highest peak in africa.

Yes, London is extremely organised (1st world vs 3rd world) and much better, but it's a rat race! work, work, work, work, work....

So yes, our crime is high, but still liveable. The politians of this country have the right ideas, it just seems the implementation is all wrong...BUT South Africa is only 10years old (you can't really count the old regime).
If you take SA's history from the very begining, it's only 400years old (discovered in 1642). Europe has existed since the year dot, so our people still have a long way to go to catch up...yes, people were around before that, but that's when "civilazation" was founded here!
Most of crime comes from poverty, people need to eat, it's basic instinct!!

Anyway, that's my rant for this week :p

raping every 90 seconds, now thats a scary and non-comforting thought to me.

Do you shoot and kill the elephants and rhinos and stuff you see at those game reservers or do you just watch?

I don't think they rape guys that much (except in prison, but those are bad everywhere)... Could be wrong though! ;)

Yeah, heh, heh... Was kinda wondering that myself. Probably just watching, it's hard (and expensive) to shoot stuff legally nowadays. But it sure would 0wn to bag rhino with one of them monster magnums! 8)

ahhh.. cyberax seems to like it here.. hes a better person than i am !mistrust

the really bad thing for us, is how difficult it is to get anywhere.. i mean, the phone company is a nightmare, (statisically the worst on Earth), and of course to get a job, u need to meet certain.. "specifications", and other things like crime, political mess, etc... i guess i'll see how the rest of the world is, when i actually manage to travel somewhere.. furthest i ever travelled was to cyberax's place, 300 KM's away.. they DO NOT appreciate us developers here, at lest from what i've seen, and that is why it sucks for me !mistrust

back to crime.. its bad.. just watching agin on TV last night, about our gun laws, and how easy it is for criminals to buy everything from 9mm's, asault rifles, SMG's, grenades, mines, and more.. lots of the stuff comes over the border, and lots from the military, and cops..

well.. theres my 13.25 cents..

All good fun...:) (Yeah Right! What kind of a F**Ked up statement did I just write!?)

Yes, the natural surroundsings are great, well the non polluted ones anyway. Cyberax is living in a very nice place. Most towns are not within spitting distance of all those features... Try Joburg for example...
I wouldn't shoot some poor animal... Save the bullets for the crims.
And I don't buy this 'I kill cause I'm hungry' BS! All that hunger can cause is stealling. The rest is nothing short of evil!!!

It's a scary place to live if you like safety, but most people around here have just gotten used to it, those who can leave do, the rest (like us) just have to suck it up... I personally am not too concerned, I am not worried about being killed. I'm a bit crazy. What worries me is that the people I know, family, etc, are in the same danger! I would walk into hell for the hell of it, but I wouldn't want a memeber of my family to do the same thing... (annalogy)

Yeah all the RS members are still alive... for now at least... I see Cyberax has given our politicians some praise. All I have for them is the finger.
They take our guns away and put them straight into the criminals' hands. The only people who are allowed to defend themselves are the crimmies.
When they say it's not legal to own a firearm, you just pray you never need it and the chances are you will one day. You must decide 'do I want to break the law and live and protect my family or do I want to be a good little law abiding corpse, pushing up the daisies near my vandalized tombstone'
The best thing is probably to just get an unliscenced gun, then when you have to use it, just toss it and get another. When they trace the slug, the'll find it belongs to a dead cop or someone like that. I hear R300 (<$50) is enough for a 9mm pistol off the street.

Just my bullet riddled, blood spattered 3 cents.

Criminal1 to criminal2: "You saw that? His head just, like, EXPLODED!"
Criminal2 to criminal1: "Yeah, that's one sweet gun you have there, it totally owned that guy!"
Criminal1 to criminal2: "Now let's take his car and money and dump his body at the side of the road."
Criminal2 to criminal1: "Okay."

Something like this?

Nope, no shooting.
Shooting rhinos and elephants is illegal (unless you are a poacher).

If you want to go hunting there are lots of private "game farms" for that. I've been to one, watching the hunt, not in it :)

It's fun :)

Yeah, but all those leaving are actualy good for us poor ones who stay behind...eventualy our skills will be needed...

Yeah, I feel that way most times as well, but overall they have done a lot of good for this country, it's just that's in a phase of change thus it seems bad... e.g. you wouldn't be able to have this forum under the previous government due to sanctions etc.

Yes, there are a lot of bad eggs in the bunch....but that's a worldwide problem...at least we know about it..look at certain other world powers governments...watch some of the consipiricy (aaggghh..spelling) theroy movies, and you will reliaze that 911 wasn't an attack by old bin larden...sorry, but there some very disturbing facts that can not be denied!

but anyway....we still have a beautiful country, even if it is full of problems (and where isn't?) :)

Well, there is something primal about the thrill of the hunt (that same thrill playing UT)...
it's not just a case of drive up to animals and blast away! The (most) hunters are very proffessional and take care not to wound an animal sensesly ...

Besides the steaks and biltong (thats jerky for you americans) is very nice afterwards :)
Nothing goes to waste, and certain animals are not allowed to be hunted (like rhino, elephant, lion etc.) no matter were you are...
I'm not a hunter, but I must admit it is fun going along...

The best is the hunt for wild pigs (boar) and warthogs...jeezz that's downright dangerous. You have to go at night (that's when they come out to feed mostly), and they run like hell...try chasing that thing in thick bush in a vehicle (you have no chance on foot) at night...just staying on the vehicle is a mission...
But again, theres just something about that primal satisfaction of arriving back at camp with a kill (yup normaly only one or two for a nights work!).

BUT, I must clarify, whilst I enjoy the hunt...I enjoy just being close and watching them. You can get (safely) quite close...there's a bigger thrill being 15m away from a very big wild elephant :p

shooting is quite fun i bet :D dunno about hunting defenseless critters though :P

eventually our skills will be needed you say? but they certainly dont give a crap now.. they only start thinking of u as glorious, after u leave, and they are begging u to come back, coz they f**cked up! this countries always been off, with its history and all, and i'm in no hurry to stick around !mistrust

its a sport, political, and history obsessed country, all of which bore the crap outta me!

just what i think..

Yeah taking on an hog in the middle of the night seems a bit more fair than poaching an elephant with an AK. Poachers should be hunted out!

Evenually we'll be needed... Pnlaaaggghhhh! Screw that! I want to do the best I can as fast as possible, not hope that one day some ungrateful AH is going to be forced to give me a decent deal!

Bad eggs... Hey Hey Hey, just because others suck, does not make our polies suck any less! I don't think much of most politicians... I agree about your 911 story, theres something more to it than binny boy. Those polits must be pretty evil to do something like that!
Politicians are an international problem! At least all places have that in common, they all have the dissease. :p

Obviously, this is just my opinion, not fact. The facts are worse!

Come to America. We'd welcome you with open arms. We may be capitalist pigs but compared to what your describing...

Life here isn't exactly perfect but I certainly don't fear for my life when I walk home at night (it's an hour long walk). If our country is to much for ya you could go to Canada.

Canada is like America-lite, less fattening.

Or come to Holland, where you can speak something that remotely sounds like Afrikaans.

I don't know if you speak English, Afrikaans or Xhosa (well, English anyways), but here's a poem in Afrikaans, Dutch, Xhosa and English.

Poem in Afrikaans:

Huil nie as Ek struikel nie;

slegs hartseer huil.

Ween ook by my neerslaan nie;

net weemoed ween.

Verdriet is traanloos

in my wêreld wat wankel,

in my hart wat vergaan.

Poem in Dutch:

Huil niet als ik struikel;

slechts hartezeer huilt

Ween ook niet als ik neergeslagen wordt;

alleen weemoed weent.

Verdriet is traanloos

in mijn wereld die wankelt,

in mijn hart dat vergaat.

Poem in Xhosa:

Ungakhali xa ndikhubeka

Yintliziyo ebuhlungu kuphela ekhalayo

Ungakhali xa ndisiwa phantsi

Lusizi kuphela olukhalayo

Ubuhlungu abunazinyembezi

Kwilizwe lam elixengaxengayo

Kwintliziyo yam etshabalalayo

Poem in English:

Do not cry when I stumble;

only heartache cries.

Also do not weep when I fall down;

only woe weeps.

Sorrow is tearless

in my world that falters,

in my heart that perishes.

Yeah I like the sound of what Terran-G is saying... :)
I'm a capatalist pig anyway. Plus you got pretty good wilderness up there too! :D A small back room in SA aint any better than a small back room in da USA, is it? Plus the chance of getting a job in your field and less crime, more english, etc... The population denisty is less in USA too... I want to work hard to improve a place where my efforts will be apreciated!
Holland is ok too, but me no speek Dutch, plus I want a nice beeg ranch in the mountains when I is making many bucks... (BTW, I'm not sure if its legal for SouthAfricans to not hate places like denmark, holland, etc) They trying to persuade us to love suicide bombers at the moment!

At least in US we would be allowed to have a nice collection of guns, like some of the dudes on this site. Good to know the stuff you're trying make in the game ey?
