Post subject:  Prey.... quake4?

i recently just played the Prey mac demo (THATS RIGHT! Prey is coming to mac =D ). not only did it run fantastic on high settings (almost all video options on) but it was actually a great game(er demo). so is it worth buying.....?

i got doom3 a bit back and i'm pretty disapointed with the lack of originality, performance, and redundancy of the game play. the game feels like its ending right when it really begins to get somewhat fun =/ , o and RoE is only for pc........

Quake4 is another game im wondering about. it doesnt run as great as Prey but it still runs great on my mac. im kind of worrying about getting cheated on game play again like i was with doom3. so is quake4 worth buying......?

im really starting to wonder if my mac will be able to handle ut2007.... i mean i know 2 of those games above are kind of "nextgen" but how far ahead will ut2007 be? eh just a thought.

You know what's funny, all the games you mentioned run on the very same engine. I guess iD didn't support Mac as well as Human Head Studios that developed Prey.

Quake 4, in my opinion, is so much better than Prey that I can't put it into words. Definitely buy that one, I admit is is kind of a mindless shooter like Doom 3, but the level design and gameplay is more flexible.

I'd buy Q4 to see the gory cutscene alone. 8)

And I doubt your Mac will run UT2007 well, on low settings at best. I'm not sure if I can go very high myself, the game makes use of graphics ahead of both our GPU's generations.

yeah ID did a pretty cruddy job =/
the engines of the three games arent exactly the same, they were just built off each other (starting with d3 of course). Prey seems to be the most advanced version of the 3 engines.... man those graphics are rockin =]

so quake4's a go i guess, what about Prey?

o and one thing that bugs me is in all three of those games there are only 9 or so weapons......

Is 9 weapons a bad thing? It is the average of the FPS history, although Quake 2 & 4 have ten guns.

Unreal has Dispers. Pistol, Automag, Stinger, ASMD, Flak Cannon, Eightball Gun, BioRifle, Rifle, RazorJack & Minigun. 10 guns.

Aaaaanyways, go with Quake 4 first James. Prey is pretty good too but it did dissapoint me, Quake 4 however was brilliant in a way that I expected; great visuals, sounds, gameplay, enemies, etc.

I did think the Gladiator could have been more dangerous though. In Quake 2 that thing could basicly rapid fire the railgun.

Not really, the weapons have limited effect on gameplay. Why do you think I got bored of BW? The weapons just aren't enough to keep one interested, what is needed is content that binds the weapons better, such as fun levels.

Plus many games aren't long enough to have more guns than that, otherwise you'd be picking up new weapons every few levels, which would get old.

I have 512 MBs and my computer struggles with Quake 4 when using 8xAA/16xAF at Ultra, I average only 35 FPS.

So you should be aiming at that or even higher, 768 MB cards are out already.

The above is assuming that you can replace videocards on Macs, by the way.

You need that amount to play any advanced game on higher settings, and in addition the card needs to be damn fast.

Is it possible to get a Dual Core Mac?

Prey and Quake both utilize Dual Cores, they speed up the game tenfold. Almost no lag at all!
I personally recommend Quake, then Prey. For Action and then Storyline.



Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Quake 4 one of the first games that can actually use a second core?

The second core has limited performance increase, the Doom 3 engine versions in Prey and Quake 4 have a range of 21 - 89% increase based on what brand you have. AMD was their main focus though...

about those 2 games.. Q4.. really cool.. Prey was OK, and had some cool elements and interestign story.. but i just found the whole game kinda the same.. all the levels were alike :( Q4 is sweet.. and the weapons are better.. although i like that acid gun in Prey.. and that leech gun..

Methinks a SP game with BW would use a buying system instead of finding them randomly on the ground for no obvious reason...

Buying system wouldn't work in a SP unless they created a special item that gives you "cash", just put them around a map.

i think each map would have its own set of weapons..... you would start out with some type of pistol and melee weapon of course.

i dont know, its a complicated matter....

That wouldn't make sense, each map is linked. You won't just magically lose weapons on transition points.

I think it'd work more along the lines of you choosing your equipment first and just kind of killing random bad guys and just acquiring weapons that way. And in between missions you'd buy/sell equipment.

But, that could be discussed elsewhere, as it seems the thread has gone a bit off-topic, I think. :)

You could split it into missions. Kind of like the episodes of the older games, there is a final boss at the end of each episode's final level. And you find different guns in each episode. For example maybe they could only have the minigun in the last two eps.
