I got Windows Vista a while ago. I'd like to know what other users think of it. :)

I personally think it's a nice upgrade. The GUI is much nicer looking than XP's. It has new icons and everything. The file system has been nicely upgraded too, it's more streamlined and has more grouping features. Some things like the Control Panel and searching feature have been completely revamped.

While I haven't tested it out much with Ballistic Weapons, it sure plays Deus Ex well. The new Nvidia drivers that are coming out for it have something I've dearly waited for; .exe specific settings. Now I can play Deus Ex with 8Xs antialiasing and 16X anisotropic filtering without slowing down any of the more advanced games like FEAR and Quake. 8)

It's a great system, just needs more stable hardware drivers and one is set for high performance gaming.

Can you even name one of those bugs you speak of?

No, but I red in a couple of magazine and the beta testers said it was some bugs left. Same with PC Gamer, they have tryed vista and said it was some bugs. But well, It was bugs when XP was new too.

go torrent, way less chance of getting viruses.

I'd get it, but it won't be necessary for a while, and when it is, it'll be cheaper and less buggy. And right now, a lot of games have lower performance with it, same as whenever a new OS comes out.

Yeah, that is because of young hardware drivers and they still need to sort out the DX9.L API somewhat, afaik.

I'm going to use XP for as long as I can simply because I don't have Vista and I hate the hassle of setting up a new OS.

The lack of OGL and Directsound3D support is a problem though..

We'll see what the future holds, but for now, i would not choose it for my gaming rig.

Well... since XP still has 4 years of life ahead, I'll keep it until Microsoft drops support for it.

Checking files for viruses with the worst AV program in existance, is not the best idea you can come up with.

I've been doing the same (Limewire, Shareaza + Norton) for a couple years now, and no major problems so far (knock on wood!), so it can't be that bad... If you apply common sense, and avoid wierdo file extensions & (most) pr0n, there's not much risk, really.

As you can see in this article, I have a good reason to avoid this BS that Symantec make.

I doubt most of the regulars even have the hardware to run WinVista. Which surprises me, I thought I was one of the few that upgrades only when absolutely neccesary.

Well, you asked so here goes....

We've been running Vista since November (Business Edition {Final - NOT Beta} was made available to customers with MVL's {Multi Volume License} back in November). Of course most of the drivers are only now comming out for hardware, so it was tough going in the begining. But it's nice to work for a MS gold partner, and work on a customer's site who has a MVL...you tend to get access to stuff quite quickly 8)

I like it, despite a few anoying "features", mainly in the so called high security features. It is these features which actualy breaks some (a lot actualy) old software, thus why some apps like Limewire don't run so good on Vista.

You need good hardware to run it on, if you want to take full advantage of it, but overall you can turn a lot of features off. We haven't had many problems, besides the intial few incompatibilities and it's been fun putting it through it paces. We've run it on Dell desktops (P4 3Ghz, 1Gb Ram) and laptops (similar spec, just the M and Core 2 Duo processors). Lots of nice things, takes some getting used to the new interface, but it grows on you quite fast, and if you've ever used linux, then you will find your way very quickly.

I did get it to run on a P3 with 384Mb ram, had to install 512Mb (otherwise the installer won't install), then take it back to 384Mb. Ran suprizingly well, provided you don't try to do too much, or expect too much :)

Overall, IMHO, it is quite nice, and will take time for large businesses to take it seriously, due to the hardware requirements, but it is the same process we went through with XP.

I use it on my work PC, and so far I'm happy...and believe me, that machine gets worked...
One VERY nasty thing we did find...if you turn on the indexing for the very nice search features, and you are running Office 2007 as well on the machine, your hard drive space disappears very rapidly.
Another nasty, is if your PC is on a domain (as in MS networking domain, not internet domain name), then the damn thing takes forever and a day to log in the first time, and every now and then again afterwards.

Office 2007 (yes we've been running that for a while as well), is much better than the beta releases, and I simply love it. If you use it for a few days then go back to a machine with office 2003 on, it's a horrible feeling...!

Only thing I'm not looking forward to, is the MS Vista exams, which I will stall until late this year or maybe even next year...when they've made up their minds how it's going to fit in with the grand scheme of things and there's more material around (they're busy with the beta versions of the MS Vista exams, if not just finished by now )..
:)

Thanks for the post Cyberax, pretty short and sweet.
And UglyPants thought 2 GBs of memory was too little for Vista. !dodge

Post subject:  Windows Vista

thanks, nice of some one to request info in my field :)

well, 1Gb min for business use...if you are going to run heavy 3d apps and games, I would push it to 4Gb, but we haven't found it's sweet spot yet! e.g. if you run XP on a pc with 256mb, then put in 512Mb-1Gb you really notice the difference, but then increase to 2Gb and you don't feel much difference to the 1Gb ! unless of course you tell XP to run in ram...then you need seatbelts!

We haven't yet isolated that "feels different" point in Vista. BUT that could be due to the vastly improved memory structuring in Vista...

4 GBs is an overkill for gaming and heavy programs, 2 - 3 GBs would be more than enough for now. Games like UT3 are gonna change that I bet.

On second thought, maybe 3 GBs would be a pretty good idea.

I've got Home Premium edition, which is the watered down version of Office and Ultimate. :)

Did you guys get to try Ultimate? My father is using it, though I have not tried it yet.

Penny Arcade never does anything halfway, do they? If they're going to make fun of something, they MAKE FUN of it. I poke my head in on them occasionally.
