Post subject:  Starting to learn to use 3ds Max.

Hey! I have started to learn 3ds max! What I'm doing is a Chinese kitchen knife for Counter Strike: Source.
Finished the model and going to UV map it. I don't really understand UV mapping, but I'm downloading a tutorial. If someone, like you guys (ShadowBlade and Dark Carnivour) could learn me to UV map? And maybe some other tips? Gonna upload some pictures:

did u download a trial or something...? or did u actually buy the program?

UV mapping is creating a surface to place the texture onto. you want to basically outline the model so there are sections(like outline the handle into 2 sections- front and back, and then the blade could be another 2 sections- front and back).

Ok select 1 half of it along the blade and got to the modifiers panel and select UVW map and chose planer mapping... Then do the same with the handle and you should have it looking ok... but be sure to do both sides... And give it a metarial

UVs!!! The lurking demon noone ever expects him! I didn't, but eventually slayed him dead... (BW is proof)

UVs, are the link between textures (2d pictures) and your meshed (3d geometry). They say what part of the picture goes onto what polygons... You use mapping tools to get started, then you manually edit the UVs to get exactly what you want...

You'll get the hang of it! ;)

Still don't work, but I've made a texture using UV mapping;

its tricky.. kinda hard to explain..

go to the autodesk webiste, and find the appropriate tutorials..

it involves selecting your model, or polygons that you want mapped, then choosing the 'UVW Map' modifier, and choosing correct options.. after that, the 'UVW Unwrap' modifier to change things in the UVW editor.. it take some getting used to :)
