Okay, a tiny bit of back story, i owned HL2 and played it on my old system with maybe 1 crash in total, now with my new system, it seems to crash at either every 3 or 4th load section (in a play section) or a random time when i use a fast save. I haven't a clue why this is happening. Only changes are added high graphics settings. |

UP: looks like some Steam crap, an incompatibility issue or something. I suggest using a good Steam emulator, a one that allows you to launch your Steam games right from their respective .gcf files without having to crack, hack or unpack something. You just do your updates via Steam and launch the games using the emulator. I never launch my Steam games from the legal Steam interface, otherwise sooner or later I'll get a crash and a message saying something like 'let's check your Steam cache, please be patient blah blah blah' |

The only error messages i get come from Xfire, so i think its just a stupid problem with xfire and half life 2 right now. Even then, no error messages, though i might have gotten 1, but i doubt it said something abou STEAM cache. The worst STEAM prob i ever got was that for a few days steam didn't think my copy was true or something to that kind, but after logging off and on it started working again. Right now, i haven't gotten any more crashes, i'll leave it as it is. Speaking of Half Life 2, Bjossi, what does the AA setting and the AF stuff do, my computer doesn't drop in frames at all with them on full, but i don't see any improvements, what do they improve? |

AA = Multisampling Smooths out edges and gives a blur-kind of effect not unsimilar to bloom. Nvidia cards only support 2x, 4x and 8x. AF = Anisotropic Filtering Enhanced texture filtering to make them appear sharper from distances. The next step after trilinear filtering. Nvidia cards support 2x, 4x, 8x and 16x. If you see no difference in framerate nor in-game looks, then something is wrong. If I set AA to 8x in any modern game my framerate crashes to the ground... |

In HL2 Ep1 I used 16xAF and 4xAA, along with HDR + Bloom. |
