Has anyone ever had oblivion crash after a short time? It happens to me almost every day I play. I am now concluding that it is due to alt-tabbing out of it. This sometimes happens automatically when Bit Defender updates, I plug/unplug an audio device, etc. I also crash when I try to exit the game. I figured out, however, that I can usually avoid crashes when exiting the game by exiting to the main menu, then hitting ctrl+alt+delete and ending the process. Otherwise, I'm pretty much guaranteed a crash; and most crashes involve having to restart my computer. Now, I have a hard time believing it could be my hardware. Sure, my cpu is taxed when I pump everything to max, including the grass, trees, and such, but this even happens when I'm in small roms that don't hit my cpu hard at all. I know it cannot be due to temperature. I have my thunder probe shut down the PC when the cpu tops 60 deg C, but it never gets above 50 in my cool basement (I assume the temp cannot change too much in the 10 seconds it takes to reboot and see the initial bios screen that shows hardware stats, including temp). So, I was just wondering if anyone else gets this kind of behavior out of Oblivion? |

I used to get this problem, here are several causes and solutions over the 2 years I played Oblivion. If you crash when you activate or use something, it's either your BSA got messed up or two plugins you picked cause a huge conflict in the game and make you crash. Solution: Figure out which mod is doing that and deactivate it. If you have washed-out sounds and crash in the middle of the game for no reason, it is a codec error. Check the official Elder Scrolls Board for more info. If you crash from alt-tabbing or quitting, it's either a codec problem (above), a serious glitch occured during gameplay, or your CPU must have been overworked. I get this problem after long sessions of play and going through a lot of places that require pretty heavy visuals (outdoors, oblivion gates, a house/castle full of candles and multiple light sources, etc.). this will not affect Oblivion in any way except for that you have to restart the game. |

What version are you using, If you havent download the latest patch for it, I never had anything as serious as what you are having but what i did have was fixed when i installed the patches. If all else fail just try reinstalling the game. |

I'll have to give it a try without the patch, and experiment with lower settings. I have noticed, though, that I almost never crash agter the compy has been running for an hour, not matter how much I torture it with all the details. Oh, and one more thing I think I'll mention is that it never crashes when alt-tabbing or quitting in windowed mode, only when I am in fullscreen mode. Too bad I can't move the screen when it's windowed, the bottom 50 or so pixels get cut off at the bottom when I window it at the same res as my desktop. Thanks for the tips. Oblivion rocks. |
