I did a little study about SLI vs. single GPU. I had previously found that in Aquamark, my score raised by 15% when I changed form single GPU to SLI (with 2 identical GeForce7900 GS cards). Now, I performed a test with uMark. Every time I switch operating systems or actiuvete/deactivate SLI, I restart my computer. Also, note that the SLI rendering mode is set to "Single GPU" instead of split-frame rendereing (split-frame seems to decrease SLI performance). Here are the results

As expected, 64-bit processing does have an advantage, but check out the averages for single GPU vs. SLI. SLI decreases performance in UT2004?!?!?!?!?!?!? I told myself that that must simply be some strange fluke, so I played the UT3 demo with SLI and noticed that the framerate is about 30 FPS without sli and 20 FPS with SLI. Does that mean that the unreal engine versions 2 and 3 don't like SLI?

Interesting results!

It's difficult to point to an exact thing and say, thats why! There are quite a few factors that could affect performance.

Check tomshardware website. they have various tests of SLI cards, and I must say, none of them are really a "mind blowing" difference over a single graphics card....

Will do, sometime. I sohould add that for the tests, I tried to keep everything identaical. The different operating systems may have different applications running, but within the same OS, everything else should be the same.

Also, let me add that while playing Oblivion, the use of SLI has a significant increased framerate of single GPU. I have no quantitative data, but could simply feel the different when walking through the same areas (using 64-bit XP Pro). I'm getting suspicious that UT simply doesn't like SLI...

UE2 games have always been far more CPU-dependant than GPU.

Would SLI add a load to the CPU? If it does, then I guess this would make sense. I had the same CPU and drivers for all tests, so maybe this could indicate that the CPU manages the SLI configuration?

CPU and GPU work together, SLi therefore requires more CPU than a single GPU setup.
