...Or maybe you stepped in something. Its getting closer and closer to the holidays, the weather is typically getting chilly, and there's just something about this time of year that puts people in a more giving mood. Usually. Its a time of year when I'm content to simply make myself a cup of hot cocoa (I prefer mine with strong coffee rather than hot water), fill it to the brim with miniature marshmallows, put on the headphones, turn on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra (way better than that typical, cheesy, Christmas-ey music ) and sit down with a dog in my lap and my drawing stuffs at hand.
Its a time of year when I grumble about the stupid snow, yet am miraculously happy to see it when I get a snow day, to go out of my way to open doors to candy laden individuals, to wonder what I'll get people for Christmas, then promptly forget about it and wait 'til the 15th or so of the month to rush for last minute presents, and just generally feel a lot more obliged to be nice. What is it that makes people either extremely grumpy or sickeningly cheerful this time of year? Is it the festive colours, the gaudy ornaments, the mind numbing music played in EVERY FREAKIN' STORE...? Perhaps, it could be the overwhelming stress, leaving some people in ill tempers, and straining the weak to a point of mental collapse, sending them in a state of euphoric shock, behaving to the code they were programmed to for the holidays. Or, my theory, is that they put something in the candy canes; a global conspiracy employed by companies world wide to suck the people dry of all their money... Er, where was I...? Oh, right. It times like these you need to stop complaining about the small things and find joy in the little things. Take snow for example- Many people who grow up in a place with snowy winters at one point begin hating the stuff... its cold, it gets you wet, and it can be hell to drive in. But, while I used to take snow for granted, there are thousands of people out there that's never even seen it before and would gladly have a chance to witness snowfall. Now, you can take this two ways: a) you can be grateful to actually have witnessed it, or b) you can shake your fist at the sky, screaming at the top of your lungs, asking why it had to pick you.
Anyways, I wish everyone luck in their last minute shopping, to be safe in their inevitable (and most likely, boring) travels to relatives' houses, and to not lick the candy canes. Happy holidays, every one! And now I'm gonna finish up this tasty steak dinner (extra rare, too!) and go for another cup of mocha. Also, you can use this thread to talk about what you guys do for the holidays, too. |

Hmm, holidays, nothing much happens around our house, though this year is going to be a lot of fun, namely cause i have from the 11th of December to the 23rd of January off (more than a month and a half). One of my friends is making sure not to forget me when he hosts his New Years Eve party this year (last year he invited everyone cept me and another friend because we both live in a different town (though its only a 10 minute drive to the other guys house (not the guy who's in the same town as me)), but whatever, plus he's going to host a chirstmas party, so that'll be fun. Amoung other things for this year, i might go up with a bunch of friends to a ski (even though i can't ski or snowboard) mountain (Tremblant) and chill at this crazy chateau for a weekend. Gifts for me suck, namely cause i usually need a parent to help get me them (Amazon.com). Though they are good enough. Tis a time of year that i get annoyed at, mostly cause my sister and parents go on a Christmas music 24/7 phase for the whole month, and not the okay Christmas music, the horrible annoying repetitive Christian sounding music. Also, i hate winter, not because of the snow (hell i love seeing the stuff covering everything, makes for nice pictures), but because i don't like wearing pants. Yep, i'd rather wear shorts, but i can't, on acount i'll get severe colds and stuff if i try (and dammit to hell i have tried). |

Yea I love this time of the year too. Unfortunately I'm not much of a pant guy myself. Ive worn shorts up until today when we got snow. So guess Ill have to start wearing them more often. |

Our typical Christmas plan has us going to our cousin's house on the 24th, we have a huge dinner with lots of pie, oyster stew, chicken and dumplings, lots and LOTS of homemade candies and desserts, and lots of other tasty foods too. Later in the night my family opens up our presents and my cousins open up some of theirs (they open the rest the next day). After the presents are opened up, we usually head home and open up the rest of our presents we kept at our house. After that I'm probably back on the computer playing a UT2004 and throwing my presents in my corner to be investigated further the next day. Though this year I might be getting a drawing tablet for my computer. If thats the case I'm gonna be doing a lot more drawing that night.

cant see how people get depressed about giving and having friends and family around. But then again not every one has the same kind of life. |

Some people find it hard to be able to pay for all the things they are typically obliged to get. Trust me, its not all that hard. |

Boxing day... Good old Canada, always getting in that extra holiday that the U.S. doesn't have. Almost forgot about that one. Thats the day sometime after Christmas where parents pack up their kids in left over boxes from the presents and ship them out into the wilderness, as a chance to let the kids play with their new toys all they want in an exciting new environment without having their parents around to bug them. Then, when the kids are away, they put on a pair of gloves on the senior relatives and throw a new set of dentures in the ring and have the grandparents duke it out for supremacy and a shiny new pair of teeth. Originally it was started as a way to conserve on the limited resources needed in the days before easy transportation was readily available. It put use to those old boxes and crates, while giving the children much needed survival skills and thinning out the population of old people. Unfortunately the whole process has been watered down a lot; the extra Christmas clothes given to the children are left in the boxes, as well as left over food. And instead of making the trek in the dead of night to place the children in the woods, they send them to the post offices and have them shipped out by someone else. Really takes away from that parent-child bonding... And the grandparent fighting is a bit of a mockery of the old time bouts. Sure, they still had on the boxing gloves, but they were done in the days before dentures. They were fighting for rights to the bed in those days. Those that lost would likely perish outside in the bitter cold. It certainly gave them a lot more spirit when they fought. Occasionally left overs were thrown into the arena for extra incentive, and there was typically a grand tournament the following week were people could exchange goods, services, and watch their best grandparents fight each other out. Now days its just an excuse to get rid of the extra crap accumulated after the holidays. I wish the U.S. had an awesome holiday like that... |
