Tinnitus thats whats its called. It can also happen when you listen to music to loud.

I've fired a handheld cannon (.357 magnum) without anything covering my ears, my ears were useless for a good while, the ringing lasted for over a day.

And thats why i don't use earphones, too big a chance to loose your hearing.

Yeah well having the noise being directly blasted into your ears doesn't sounds fun to me (i used them on my Europe trip but thats pretty much th e only time I've ever used them.

You need to crank the volume ridiculously high in order to do permanent damage, even with headphones. I think the tolerance level is well over 100 dB, probably goes as high as 140. And believe me, anyone with normal hearing will start feeling pain before going that high, use that as a sign to drop the volume.

By the way, my headphones have an interesting safe guard; they are so cheap that if I up the volume above certain level, instead of hearing the audio louder I hear increasing amounts of audio distortions; bass turns into cracking sounds, a hiss background noise, etc.

Yeah, your right, even on my trip i didn't put them quite loud, its just my preference is listening through a speaker then earphone. But i do know a few people who listen to stuff so loud, I'm amazed they aren't deaf.

I used to prefer speakers, but ever since I got headphones 2 years ago I've liked them better. They offer better feel of surround than 5.1 or even 7.1 speaker systems. And if you decide to spend some cash on them, you'll hit the jackpot.
