Ashura : Dark Reign

Well, for those of you who don't know it yet, there's a Sonic Mod out there for UT2004

The demo was released some days ago !lol
What do you think of this demo ?

Personally, I've tried it and I was a bit disapointed with the controls but there's really great things in this demo ! The modders have done a really good job.

They said the demo has nothing to have with the final version of the mod, let's hope Sonic and his friends won't be as hard to control as in the demo !lol

I just tried it yesterday! I love it, but yeah, controls are a bit awkward. I imagine with a decent controller it'd be a heck of a lot easier to play though.

Been watching this mod on ModDB for a while now.

Y'know... there's something about these Sonic fans who try to make the franchise all dark and broody (in short, EMO) that just rubs me the wrong way...

I've been watching it for a while too, the videos are awesome !

They made a contest for the drawing of the new ennemy of Sonic : Ashura.
Well, ennemies aren't ennemies if they're not evil and want to conquer the world !
They simply tried to find a new kind of scenario rather than the classic Dr. Robotnik, they really didn't searched to make the Sonic franchise all dark which was already with Shadow the Hedgehog.

Ashura is kind of a recolouring of Shadow (which was already a recolouring of Sonic).
I even remembered to think that Knuckles the Echidna was a dark Sonic first time they had shown it.
They made the manga and with it, plenty of new characters appeared (after all, Sonic isn't the only Hedgehog in the world)

So, personnaly, I like Sonic and think the idea of Ashura isn't bad at all !
It's just the awkward control !mistrust

I thought they are going a bit too dark in it, too, judging by their descriptions, but eh, oh well. I'll get over it.

Just seems weird and a bit silly of them making a mature game out of a kid's game.

What really bugs me is the excessive amounts of hedgehogs... Like Shadow, he kinda took away from Sonic's uniqueness, and lately with Silver, gets a bit old with all the hedgehogs...

Oh well, I still like Sonic games, I'll probably play it anyways. :)

I've been following this one longer than X has! I actually showed it to him a LONG time ago.

But yeah, a darker Sonic style is just hard to master without it being crap. I had an idea of it actually, but it was mainly because it oncorporated more realistic themes, like actually showing blood and gore when getting hurt, and not losing cruddy rings. Think about it, rings instead of blood? I think losing a bit blood is a bit more realistic. Of course, can't be excessive!

Ashura actually came before Shadow. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, through some weird button pressing in one of the levels while in debug mode, you can turn Sonic green. For some reason, people decided to call the green hedgehog Ashura. Dunno why.

Also, the Sonic franchise has really gone down the shitter. I blame the ridiculous amounts of dumb characters they added in. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are enough, dammit!

EDIT: Oh yeah, can't forget Robotnik/Eggman.

Hmm, Sonic mature ? Blood ? Gore ? Where ?
In Ashura : Dark Reign ? Well, I played it and didn't saw any gore of any kind ! It was just the same ring things.

I didn't know Ashura existed before in green !dodge

Well, they added new characters for the story actually (manga), seeing always the same characters would have fed up the public a long time ago ! It would have always been the same things.
So, they tried to go deeper in the world with new characters (especially female characters) to introduce a love story (I think Amy came first and was in love with Sonic, am I wrong ? I don't remember)

But basically, it was an answer to Super Mario which already had a huge amount of characters (Mario already had two lovers : Daisy (Mario Bros 2) and Peach).
Then Sega, which was still in war with Nintendo, died with it's last excellent, and yet unknown console : the dreamcast (far better than the playstation 1).

If you read in the ModDB description, you'll see they intend for this to be a mature audience only game. The demo isn't, but the demo isn't really involved in their intended story as far as I know.

The game feels and looks like a Sonic game ! Nothing mature...
Well, I don't say this because of the demo, but I've seen the videos and some progress on the official website and it's just like every sonic but with a new ennemy ?! (and crappy controls)

I don't see what kind of "mature" things they could implement though ? Blood ? Gore ? Then why have done the rings ? Well, if you look at the manga, it isn't something as beautiful as in the game, feels more like a "dragonball Z" (especially with the emeralds) and Sonic get some scratch on him, the way Sangoku had them while fighting but though, nothing mature x)

Well, I wonder... Before talking of mature things and cursing the developpers for how they annihilated the franchise, let's see what they will bring us with the final version of the mod :d

Thats what they said, but I didn't see it either. And by manga, do you mean japenese style comics or just regular comics?

Because I have some of the regular comics and they seem to match up with what you're saying, its just that I'm not sure if you're talking about those.

Actually I knew you could find it in regular comics (only saw them here and there, but never read them really) but I was talking about the japanese comics which I knew better (However I didn't read them all).

If you watch the Japanese Anime, it's the same too, well, they take the story of the japanese comics but with some differences though. (As usual from Manga to Anime)

Actually, they take from the storyline of the Fleetway Sonic Comics, not Archie, althought they said they might include a FEW characters from Archie Sonic.

GTA Sonic ? ROFLOL !!!!! !lol I imagine Sonic knocking poeple to have their car !

I'm sure the game won't be Mature, by making saying this, maybe they wanted to say the story and levels will be a bit darker ? Though it is not a reason to call it "mature" ! !mistrust

Dekrayzis doesn't care to have many testers, since he knows people would only want to be part of the team to beta test. That probably means that DQ won't be a tester along with voicing Shadow. Too bad they don't use the RS style of work, letting lots of people test...

Hey, since you do voice Shadow, mind if we get a few samples? :P

(BTW, anyone know who is doing the Tails voice work for the mod?)

That's right, I've asked the man himself, and he said while he does trust me not to send out the beta files, he'd rather keep them to himself until a proper release. Thus I haven't done any of the original beta testing on the Sky Sanctuary level and such.

By the info on the site, we don't have a Tails VA yet, which is odd because I'm sure we did o.0

And yes, I can do some samples. Tell me what you want me to say and I'll record it now ;p
