Quote: ARToolKit is a software library for building Augmented Reality (AR) applications. These are applications that involve the overlay of virtual imagery on the real world. For example, in the image to the right a three-dimensional virtual character appears standing on a real card. It can be seen by the user in the head set display they are wearing. When the user moves the card, the virtual character moves with it and appears attached to the real object.
Basically, all it's doing is taking a picture of the environment and putting a 3d character on top of the card. It would only be visible on a screen or visor. A neat trick, sure, but not quite on the same level as projecting a giant holographic dragon onto some fog, where anyone can see it. |

Well, ArToolkit is really weird... It's not a real hologram... But it could be a way to phone to each other with the head set

i had an idea once for making a holoTV, basically, you take two concave mirrors, and one has a small hole on top. if you drop something in the hole, a hologram of the object will appear right above the hole. like this: http://www.wfu.edu/physics/demolabs/dem ... 6a2035.jpg now, if we can make something that is reflective and can mimik the functions of an LCD screen (ie. change color), and figure out the exact path of light from the object that was dropped in, we can then use the LCD-reflective concave mirrors to mimik the same light path as if there was something dropped in there, and thereby making an actual hologram. i haven't patented this yet, i dont think anyone has, but please, dont patent it before me, i need the $$$

btw, i failed to mention, holograms today are an intersection of light in a foggy type substance that floats in air, (sort of like how you can see laser beams if it is a smoky room), but my device doesnt need anything other than a power source and digital cable (who wants to watch a holographic image on basic cable?). also, in the image above. the INSIDE of the thing is made of mirrors, not the outside. |

I definitely find the Sea Serpent more impressive than augmented reality, but both are damn impressive. I've seen that Augmented Reality a year or so ago, and they said that they want to make the software cheaper so that basically everyone can have one and then incorporate this augmented reality into real life. Definitely could have many uses, like as a teaching tool, help with online sales (like ebay where you want to preview the item before buying), and information systems like some sort of interactive kiosk, could use it for maps, like displaying in 3d certain landmarks so that you may find your way easier. Also could make for some awesome card games and board games. And TV, that could be awesome as well. I can imagine all sorts of virtual pets, personal advisers and data managers, and companionship and 3d photos of your family and such. Whats better is that this could happen in our own lifetime. Also, another cool thing I seen recently is some sort of program thingy that takes all sorts of photos from some image hosting site and compiles them accurately into an accurate 3d model. You can probably take a guess how that could bring Augmented Reality even closer towards full integration of everyday life. |
