Erm hi

I have had a look at the editor in Ut3 and are just starting to get used to it. The map im making at the moment is the first i have made for anything. I have quite a big problem and need help. I am not able to use any textures at all anywhere.

Please if you know how to fix this tell me...

thanks in advance.

Things are a bit different compared to previous UEds. Use the generic browser (the blue checkered box along the top). This allows you to independantly show or hide materials, textures, sounds, meshes, etc. Check or un-check the boxes to determine what is shown. You cannot use textures directly on a surface. Remember that. Only materials can be used. You can find the official materials in "Unreal Tournament 3 / UTGame / CookedPC". The 'Environments' directory has most of the interesting stuff.

If you want to use a specific texture, turn it into a material by right-clicking on a blank spot of the generic browser and form the right-click menu, go to new material. Select a package for it. In the material editor, you will see a black sphere (or cube or cylinder) and in the middle area, a large rectable (called a node). It's named "PreviewMaterial_...". It has with little boxes on the side, where you can attach things, labeled: diffuse, specular, distortion, etc. On the very right is a list of things you can add to your material. Choose a "texture sample", drag it out to the main center area, and, in the menu on the bottom, add your texture. You can move this node you just made by ctrl+left-drag, copy with CTRL+C, and paste with CTRL+V. Click-drag your mouse from the black node on the texture sample to the top node of the box that was there when you first opened the material editor, (I think the top attachment point is called "base texture" or something like that. You now have a material... almost.

Build your material by clicking on the left of the 3 gree check marks at the top of the material editor, close it, and save your amtieral in the generic browser (file->save). Now, you can use it.

One more "gotcha": You cannot distribute your map or play your map in UT3 until you "cook" your map (one of the top right buttons in the amin editor window). However, you can play through your map at any time from the editor by right-clicking on a floor and selecting "start form this location". If you hold CTRL while you do tyhat, you spectate instead of aply and a bot runs around your level (if you ahve paths).

In the screenshot below, I have done what I described, where I use a stone texture in the Diffuse "channel". Just for kicks and giggles, I threw in a green specular to make the surface appear to be shiny. That vector parameter is basically a color with a color chooser in the bottom menu. To increase or decrease the intensity of the effect, use a multiply node to multiply that vector parameter with a constant (I think called "1-constant" in right side menu). The left of the three checkmark boxes is grey only because I already clicked it.

Not seeing the "add picture" button, so I guess I have to double-post?

yeah I already figured it out thanks for the help though!

The map is coming along quite nicely now, though at the moment it isn't anything special. Ill post some pics if you want.

Oh yeah i have another small problem. The only lights that are actually visible are point lights. if you know anything about that.

What lights are not showing up? You may not have the correct light channels set for the lights and the surfaces nearby. Check the lighting channels on both. I know I got a spotlight to work properly. Just slap it in and point it somewhere.

Another question. How do you add blocking volumes?

Good question, i haven't a clue how you do it either.

It's the same as in any previouse unreal editor. Setup your constructor brush, right click on the "special brushes" icon, and select "Blocking Volume"

Rain? Try looking for some sort of weather effect actor or an existing particle system. If not, make a new particle system.

If it's not in the start menu, copy your UT3 shortcut, go to the properties and add the word "editor" after the quotes.

Example: "D:\Program Files (x86)\Unreal Tournament 3\Binaries\UT3.exe" editor

k

I found another way. THere's an 'editor' button in that tool thingie where you can select maps to play which activates the unreal editor, but your way is easier on the long term.

I´m already fully on this new map, and the BSP design is looking nice so far

Gonna be a small deatchmatch level, good for about 3 vs 3 in Teams or 4 to 6 free players.
Already got a name and a special: DM-B-Intoxicated.
The special is that the lower floors get flooded by neuro toxic gasses for some small time every few minutes, people have only limited time to get to higher grounds before choking in the green fog.

The better pickups lie in the middle of the arena on the lower floors, where it takes awhile to get to the higher grounds. Without a trick, I make sure you'll be too late to reach safe grounds.

Its a simple map. A middle room, 2 height levels (maybe 3, its in early stages), and small rooms/hallways around the middle room. The style is the style of those human technologic stuff.

I have this map idea going which is basically a remake of the UT99 map: Pure Action. Also thinking of putting the flags underwater, so that yoiu have a shorter direct run underwater or can go up and take the surface. Does that sounds like a bad idea, or do you think it might work well if I pull it off right?
