If you have a few grand to throw around maybe consider a Dell XPS or an Alienware.

Alienware are ridiculously overpriced, but Dell are reasonable though.

I don't know, to be honest.
But I do know that Alienware place the hardware high in terms of value.

Don't make the same mistake I made by getting a machine that isn't balanced. The laptop I got had a video chip that could handle up to 287MB of shared memory, but the motherboard limited it to 128MB.

Since your question was inhibitively vague, I'll go ahead and give you a vague respons. Check out this: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory ... ks-Laptops

ASUS is making a 7" wide laptop that runs Linux. I've heard good things about this distro and you can expand its 2GB capacity by wandering over to Frozrncpu.com and picking up one of their 8GB USb sticks for about $30. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi ... 0+-+%24300

Here's a more powerfule laptop: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834201001

My friend has a dell and he's had nothing but trouble with it. Another had an alienware, paid 300$ more but has no problems. Its all about the money and if your willing to gamble with efficiency and reliability.

Gambling is not a good choice of words.
It doesn't matter what brand you go with, there will always be two possibilities; you get lucky, or you don't. Dell, HP, Alienware, Compaq, doesn't make a difference in that regard.

But what should be considered is the rep of the manufacturer. Instead of judging by a single case, it would be best to read more reviews and find out the truth of the manufacturer's reliability. If one friend had a bad Dell, it says absolutely nothing.

I would rather watch 2 years of Krusty the clown standup than take an arts class.
