Why the heck would Windoze ask me that? I notice this happens at work when a Wondoze system requires you to change you password every once in a while. Why would they even bother to ask me if I want to change my password before I must change it? Oh well, I guess I'll have to change my password from rsrules17 to rsrules18. Ok, so that's not really my password, since it must contain a capital letter, some symbol, and some number, but it seems that is what everybody does.

Are you talking about Windows here? I have never been asked to change my password before.

I don't think they are, I assume it's a private network at school/college/work?

This is Windoze. It is common in large businesses. I think it is a feature that is built into XP. I heard from a f riend that XP has the normal default login system you see on your personal computer, then a more advanced login system that is common in schools and businesses. I guess this expiring password "feature" is part of that non-default login system.

It is standard in Windows.

On a normal installation it asks you for a username, and leaves your password blank. Then it automaticaly logs you in to Windows using that username. If you have more than one username, it waits at the "login screen" when you boot the machine.

If it was setup in a school/work environment then its likely they either created the usernames individualy on the computers (which I doubt), or they most probably connected to the machines to a windows network domain, which means the usernames/passwords are controlled by Microsoft Active Directory, on the domain, and the default domain settings are passwords expire every 30 days. In this environment, the normal "easy" login screen is disabled and the standard login screen (which requires you to press CTRL-ALT-DEL before you can type in your username/password), which is more secure, and also allows other login devices (card readers and finger print devices etc.).

For those that didn't understand that, its nothing special, its just the way the PC's have been configured on their network. It is standard in XP (except home edition which cannot be used in such an enviroment, it is crippled by MS in this regard), but for normal installations it uses the auto-login features and the "easy" login screen.

For those that want to, you can set it yourself on your windows (except XP Home Edition which can do it but it's a bit less configurable). It does take a bit of work, and not really nesseccary for most home installations.
