I have recently purchesed half life 2 ep. 1 and 2 with online deathmatch and i am wondering weather i need a steam subscription to play them and if i do, does it cost money?

Steam is a free program, it updates all of your games constantly and allows you to manage content such as videos, mods, etc. I recommend using steam if you play a good amount of video games.

Only problem is you NEED a internet connection active to even play offline games.

No. You need the internet to INSTALL the games, to PLAY them you just need a computer that meets requirements. This is the so called Offline Mode I'm referring to, gets activated automatically if you attempt to open up steam when the internet is broken/unavailable/etc.

Steam is about the best electronic delivery system. The prices are also generaly ok.
You can play happily in offline mode once your game is installed and you have run it once, although you do need to fetch updates every now and then
Here's a thread on the Valve forums about offline mode.

I see they've changed the site SteamPowered as well in the last few days.

I think it looks nice, although a bit "busy". The old one was much more "clean".
But there is more ease of access on the new look.

Direct2Drive is the same idea but executed differently. I was talking about clients like Steam, that are installed on the computer and manage the games you have bought.

oh, ok...yeah only really Steam I think...

There is EA's (I think..) one, but the client looked so crappy I didn't get as far as buying a game in it...
