South Africa was hard hit this weekend. The Cape area was hit by massive storms, which left a trail of damage everywhere. The rest of the country was very hard hit with extremely bad fires. Kwazulu-Natal and Mpumalanga provinces were the hardest hit. The area of Melmoth (about an hour from where I stay) was very hard hit, with an estimated 3000 Ha of forestry and grasslands being burnt since Saturday and still burning. It was with great sadness that we learnt of the death of a pilot on Satuday afternoon, near the Melmoth area. He was busy with fire fighting operations at the time. More information cannot be released yet as he was from New Zealand and next of kin are being informed via the relevant authorities. The job these pilots do is nothing short of heroic. I am involved in a forestry company, and have close contact with the guys running the fire fighting operations (besides being close friends with some of them and providing IT services to them). The guys have been fighting the fires at Melmoth all weekend, and are still at it, and still had to deal with the crash. There was also another fire fighter killed in a different fire (and area) on the weekend. The death toll including civilians is around 14 at the moment from all these fires. Our hearts and thanks go out to all the fire fighters out there fighting against these fires. I'll post some pictures of the fires and the aircraft later. |

Wow. This is very sad news indeed... I hope no more lives will be taken from this series of disasters. I wish them luck and the best. |

I see the news has made it to New Zealand: www.hawkesbay.co.za Talking to some of the people at the scene, the plane suddenly nose dived at full throttle to the ground, which rules out pilot error, but sadly leaves the option of heart attack/stroke etc. We will only know for certain after the inviestigation, which could take a long time before they release their findings. |
