Hey

Lately i've been wanting to get better sound for my music CD's and i wonder how do i accomplish that? Like roughly i think from what i know, a 25mg for a average length song.

Reasons being is that now i have some awesome sound systems, and its easy to tell distortion or static in the background.

Also, i use iTunes for CD ripping.

Size isn't too much of a bother, since my next ipod will be 32 gigs and my computer has more than enough space on its harddrive.

Like, i know Apple has lossless encoder... would that be pretty damn good for high quality? Even though if you set the Apple lossless encoder it is just automatic.

Would it be better to just use some other software to rip then transfer to Apple (but i'm sure u loose quality that way).

im not sure if this is what you are looking for, but do a google search for adaptive transform acoustic coding. also look here

http://jthz.com/mp3/

and here

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2239

im not too sure about this, but i think most audio on CDs is not compressed, so i imagine you have to find an encoder that does not compress the files. i did a search an i came up with these that seem to be high definition audio encoders, which are lossless obviously.

the first one was the apple one, which you already know of. the other ones are MPEG-4, Free Lossless
Audio Codec.

also look into PCM, which is totally uncompressed (more commonly called a .wav file), these files are 10 mb per minute, and are used for CDs, so i think this might be what you want. also take a look at broadcast wave format, which is what is used for movies and TV audio, but i think what you want is the .wav file.

hope this helps.

Rip CDs to 16 bit wave files with a program of choice and then compress those files with an encoder you want.

My favorite format is ogg vorbis. The reason is that it has the best lossy encoder currently available; aoTuV beta 5.5 ogg vorbis encoder. All you have to do there is to find and download the encoder (which is just a simple exe; venc.exe) and use command-line to encode the wave files you extracted from the CD earlier. How to use the command-line is explained in a readme file iirc.

Here you can find the encoder. Just scroll to the download links, you can't miss it:

If you are unsure what programs play ogg vorbis files, there are quite a few. I can name XMPlay, WinAmp, Windows Media Player and Foobar off the top of my head.

This may seem like a daunting process, but once you learn it it will be a lightning fast ripping method and very rewarding in audio quality. Ogg vorbis can go as high as 500k, retaining a near-original quality version of the wave files but 3 times smaller.

If you are interested to give this a try, I'll give you more information if you get stuck.
