yep my chances for getting a new computer once again is shot right to the ground when my dads computer which i could of got died. His mother bored went out and the computer place couldn't find a replacement motherboard so my dad got a brand new computer. And to make matters worse my little brothers idiot friend went on his computer and ♥♥♥♥♥ it up to the point where it can only boot in safe mode, and we cant find the cds to reformat it so he gets another computer"older computer not as old as mine" that has been wiped clean and had windows 2000 installed on it. It has windows 2000 on it because hes lucky to get one that is fast enough to run it unlike mine. so all we needed to do was swap out the old network card put in a newer video card and put all the drivers on it and it was ready to go. so therefore im stuck with this old ass computer for another year or so enles i save money to buy a new one, even tho it would probably die well before that since its so friken old

1: If someone still has the installation key for the Win XP that was on your ro's computer, then just download a torrent for Windows XP SP2 and use that key. I haven't used torrents, but I have used a key with a disk it didn't come with.

2: Granted, I'm a bit more of a nerd than some people, but I have a hard time believing that someone would throw out a computer just becasue the operating system was trashed. You could always install something like Madriva or Ubuntu Linux for free and do pretty much anything you can do with the average Windows system... except it can't handle gaming as well. Your average layman can install such stuff these days.

3: I guess this whole rant about yourt dad getting a new computer is based on the fact that you are depending on him for new hardware?

4: It has been my experience that many people who work at PC stores don't know half as much about computers as they do about marketing. If you're up to it, gimme the specs of the computer with the fried motherboard (CPU, type of RAM, and video card) and there's a good chance I could find a reliable online source for it.

the computer place sent my dad a new one since they could not fix the old one. we just simply don't have the time or money to find a replacement mother board on our own right now and my lil bros computer was running off of windows 98 so he cant get xp it just isn't fast enough to run it neither is mine. heck mine would have trouble running windows 2000. and the fee the place probably charged us is way less than buying a brand new computer since they couldn't fix it. and eventually my computer will break down leaving me computerless for some time, when that happens i do not know but i tell you its close also setting up torrent isn't as easy and as simple as it sounds and we just dot have the time do mess with it.

Hmm... I will be getting a new new computer soon, and I should be replacing a large portion of my parts with the new ones, and I'm not fully sure what I'd do with the old parts. I'd have to talk it over with my mom, but I might be able to set you up with my old motherboard, graphics card, and RAM for pretty cheap if you're interested.

Its nothing impressive, the CPU is a 1.65GHz AMD XP (I currently got it overclocked to 1.8GHz without doing much), 1.5 GB RAM (I think), and an old 128MB Radeon 9200 graphics card. Nothing much, but if things work out, I'd probably let you have them for under $100.

iv aready tried putting a radeon card in my computer from my dads im not sure what one it was but i know it runs on windows 98 but it wouldn't fit and im not sure if i could do anything with my CPU or video card since the slots for my motherboard are to old to upgrade to anything that came out now days but im not sure if the mother board your suggesting will fit in this one or my dads but if you could give me the specs for the motherboard and what type of slots the CPU and video card need and what the system requirements are. i aready have a asus geforce2 7700gts but it only has 64 MB of ram on it so my computer dousnt have alot of ram at all heck my computer dousnt even have a half a gig of ram.

Trunkmonkey, accept Xav's offer, he will have no use for those parts (as far as I know) once the new computer is up and running. It is definitely better than nothing at all.

Though Xav, if you don't give the fella a mobo with those parts he will have a hard time finding something ancient enough. . .

One possibility for what to do with your old computer hardware is to invest a little bit to make it a whole computer, again. Then, you have another computer in case a friend comes over and wants to play Doom or Quake (1). Another idea for it is to just plug it into the network and use it as a server. If it has a somewhat decent CPU, then it could run a deicated UT04 server 24/7. You can also remotely access it from a different computer using some VNC program. I think tightVNC is free.

Yes, I could do that, but I was also like it for trunkmonkey to have a usable computer too.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, but the motherboard comes with the other components. They were all used in the same computer.

Basically you'd have a large chunk of a computer already, just need a case, some CD/DVD drives, a hard drive or two, and the usual mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

If you are interested I'll talk to my mom and I'll see if I can work something out.

I'd probably just ship it to you through UPS or federal mail. When I can get things set up I'll PM you on the details.

My case is pretty much standard sized tower, I'm not sure what its classified as at the moment.
