I heard about it, though I only knew of Team Fortress 2 having it.

Personally, I got mixed feelings about achievements.

On one hand, it provides replay value by giving you an alternate set of goals to work for, and it awards you for things truly deserving of an achievement.

On the other hand, it also creates what I like to call, achievement whores. They lower their standards to get some petty award and end up playing the game not because they like it, but because they want to get that damn 50 points.

Example:

Rock Band 2's Gold Star achievement. My brother ended up playing some crappy Beastie Boys song repeatedly to get a perfect song on Bass. No one in the house likes the song, and the song is far from difficult even on Expert mode. Hardly worth considered an achievement when you get it by playing the easiest song out there, let alone a song you absolutely hate.

/end rant

I love Rock Band 2, I'd say its better than Guitar Hero 4, but that's only because I just sing (just doesn't feel right in GH4). But I have heard a lot of other people say they prefer RB2 to GH4 as well.

How many Source games have achievements, besides the ones you mentioned?

Ah, ok. I was wondering how many had achievements. I'm kinda surprised they didn't go back with HL2 and Episode 1 and put in some achievements.

In TF2, you unlock new weapons by earning achievements.

yeah they got about 150 achievements, and only 3 of the 9 classes have unlockable equipment now.

I wonder what the other 6 will get for weapons when you get their achievements =D

Steam Achievements r lame compared to Live achievements.

u don't like steam achievements? really?

So, I never get the point. What do you get for acheivements on Steam of Live besides the satisfaction of knowing that you spent more time playing maps or missions you have already played?

Post subject:  Steam Achievement system

Yeah, i just find it useless, if it coincided with Xbox Live achievements then ya.

I like the achievement idea in steam but most people don't. oh well. everybody's got an opinion on this and I do respect everybody's opinions!

I'm not saying it sux, just asking why some people like it.

I like the extra challanges some achievements provide. Such as 'Launch the Garden Gnome into space' makes things pretty funny. But other achievements like 'kill 200 baddies with SMG' are boring, that only takes time to do, not skill.

Achievements are much more fun when you get special rewards besides the bragging rights. Such as with Team Fortress 2' achievements. They unlock new weapons.

Its not that its bad, its good, but it doesn't have any effects on anything else, probably cause the steam community doesn't empathize the achievements that Xbox Live does.

yeah... thats true. I like getting achievements but getting most of them are a challenge.

Achievements are pointless. If I want to achieve something specific I just do it. After all only weirdos go after achievements without actually wanting to.

I wouldn't go as far as say they're pointless, its nice to get those little perks for doing stuff out of the ordinary.

Plus, like I said earlier, they add replay value to the game.

Not for me.

Maybe not for you, but for the general gaming public they do. They give you something to go back through the game and find/do.

I go back through games if I like the gameplay. I didn't need any achievements to play System Shock 2 through 15+ times, or Quake similarly often.

In some cases achievements are done right, but many games use them as a sad attempt to boost replay value of an otherwise weak game, Bioshock is a good example of that. Not only that, but the developers plan to add trophies for digging deep into the storyline, god forbid that they actually make the story interesting enough for people to dig deep with their home-baked interest.

Acheivements, well, since I has no X360, windows live and PS trophies are the way to go for me.

@SX... steam achievements are the way to go for me.

Achievements make you feel like you've achieved something while playing the game. There good and i like em, and it seems that most people chare my opinion otherwise valve wouldn't have put them in steam.

You can achieve that without the help of achievements. (pun intended)

I really like the achievements in Far Cry 2 on the X360 for one primary reason: they are indicators of how much you have completed of a game. For instance, once you beat all the missions to get malaria meds, you get an achievement (this helps to know that you now have infinite malaria meds and will never need to worry about running out). Another one is telling you that you've finished all the weapon dealer missions (oh, no need to try finding that gun dealer to get more missions from him to get new guns!).

Otherwise, a lot of achievements suck... but I did really find it great to know I finally reached level 50 in Forza Motorsport 2 and get an achievement that was pretty big in points. Of course I was actually getting more satisfaction from the knowledge that I could enter the final races of the game, which are level 50 only events. Yay, time for hell on earth trying to race P1 class prototypes on Sebring Full for an endurance!!

yeah... thats true. I bet some of the achievements in far cry 2 are easy to get.
