I just bought Pain Killer: Black, off of a friend today.
i haven't been this impressed by a first person shooter in such a long time, even though i played the xbox version way back when. Its so stress revealing to just blow shit up like you do in this game, i love the gore and weapon punch that knocks the shit out of all of the awesome monsters.

I do have a bit of a problem though, currently im running it natively on my Intel mac and im having some performance hitches... it feels like my computer is trying to run the game off of the CD which that idea is plain retarded. I got to the catacombs and the slow down was so terrible, so i lowered the texture quality a LOT. That didnt make any difference so i quit the game... anyways i ended up reinstalling the game after a few stupid mistakes on my part.

I am thinking of just using windows xp on my intel mac again(which worked flawlessly as far as using win xp goes), so i can play this masterpiece of a game w/o performance hindering of any kind. I tried installing the patches to update the game but when i hit the install button after choosing where to extract the patch to the installer just quits... im so disappointed. but then again i am surprised the game even runs nativly on my mac at all.

Anyways... it looks like my two options are
1. Play the outdated version of the game like it is
2. Run win xp again and play the game flawlessly
3. Get some poor sucker to extract the 1.62 and 1.64 patches and upload the files inside so i can download them and update my game, even though the performance probably wouldnt change much.

Anyways, Pain Killer is an awesome adrenalin rush even on low settings... but looks pretty beautiful on higher settings.
I have some thinking to do it seems, great stuff anyways.

I just looked up this game on the ol'wiki. Is it still out and about being sold? Or have they pulled it off the shelves? Im viewing it on youtube right now and it looks pretty solid.

Try opening the patch with WinRAR, or change the executable extension to .rar, then try opening it. It works sometimes.

Oh man I love that game... Still playing it now. :D

Check the Bloom though. That got me when I had my older computer still. The thing is, I didn't notice the Bloom in game so I really didn't look for an option to turn it off. Don't make that same mistake. :P

The game always ran slowly with Bloom, though the frame rate seemed surprisingly smooth. After I turned Bloom off, it ran smooth as ever but at full speed, on fairly high settings, too, I think.

Even now with max settings I'm not sure I notice the Bloom. But it is very beautiful.

Though one thing I have to comment on is the levels. They're great looking, have a good atmosphere, but they seem kinda flat or something. Can't really explain it. Doesn't really detract from the game at all though.

And NoFatties, you can probably find it without too much trouble. They just re released Painkiller Black + Battle Out of Hell + Painkiller Overdose all bundled into one $30US package a couple months ago. Might not find it in your stores too easily, even though I think it is stilled stocked at my local Wal Mart. Even then, it shouldn't be hard to find online, considering the re release.

Only buy the Painkiller: Triple Dose package if you don't plan to play multiplayer, there is no CD key included, they simply forgot, however that is possible.

This game is a masterpiece indeed. And no less technologically. Instead of lag, low framerates will simply slow down the engine timer, making the gameplay run in slow motion-like manner.

Yeah, I love that slow motion like stuff. Much better than lag.

Also, I didn't receive a CD key in my Painkiller Gold edition, but I just emailed the Publisher, they asked me to scan the CDs, then they sent me a CD key.

Awesome, thanks! Now to go all over NYC to search for this game :)

Haha, i played this game on my dads more powerful intel mac and it ran beautifully. Max settings with no slowdown, and yes i find it odd that the game just slows down when lag happens(instead of moving in a choppy like motion). The game is a load of fun, i shall try opening the patches like said.

Also, i tried installing windows on my mac again and the program told me that my HD was damaged(or something) and told me to run Disk Utility to repair it. I had no luck with this disk utility program, it did tell me there is corruption in my HD though... blah this is a pain.

I'll also check out Triple Dose when i get the chance!

Triple Dose is a waste of money if you got the first two games already, imo. You are only missing Painkiller: Overdose, which isn't that good as far as the demo goes.

Ah, well thanks for the advice Bjossi.
I think im going to have to reformat my Mac HD possibly...
I'll just have to back up a few things, eh great.

A disk scanner can usually correct any errors. But if this is bad sectors at work, you won't be recovering them by any means. I don't know about Mac OS X, but WinXP automatically labels bad sectors as inaccessible, preventing file fragments from getting written onto those sectors and corrupting the file as a result.

it It said a volume of my HD needed repair or something...
and the repair button underneath "varify HD" wont allow me to press it so idk what i can do.

My father thinks that files have become fragmented on my computer over time and this is causing the so called corruption therefore not allowing me to partition my HD to boot windows... i have no idea.

Fragmentation won't lead to corruption unless one or more fragments are unreadable for one reason or another. Even if a file is scattered all over the HD, the head will simply read the fragments in the correct order.

Try a reformat and see what happens.

Hey James, I've possibly run into a similar problem as you. One of the registry hives got corrupted out of thin air and made me unable to boot into Windows. I've pretty much ruled out a dying hard drive but I think you could benefit from my research.

If you know the manufacturer of your hard drive, you can go to their website and download a diagnostic utility that will scan the hard drive for errors thoroughly. These utilities are contained inside their own mini-OS so you can perform the scan without booting into Mac OS X or Windows. Either they offer a program that creates a bootable floppy or an iso to burn onto a CD. Seagate has both on the table, dunno about others.

I ran a long test on my HDD and it passed without errors so I no longer have a suspect to blame for what corrupted the registry.

Err, after a recent discovery I no longer trust that tool I used. My drive passed the test but yet managed to have Windows tell me about a missing system file, when only 1 MB on the drive is actually in use according to XP's setup screen.

Either that drive is going bad or Microsoft use very impressive compression on the operating system. %-6

You sure it wasn't an error on XP's fault? Hopefully you can get this taken care of without too much trouble.

When the MFT and boot sector stay intact for 3 years and then corrupt out of the blue, I have my doubts about XP being the only one responsible.

I say MFT and boot sector because I believe those are causing all my problems. If the MFT got corrupted, then the operating system has no way of knowing what is actually on the HD, hence the reason for the weird free space report as well as the inability to find system files. These features can be rewritten with the recovery console but I don't have access to it because Windows thinks the HD is empty. Ironic huh?

Heh, yeah, that is kinda ironic.
