Well 'Ello der Chaps! I have recently purchased all of the parts for a new computer.

GA-EP35C-DS3R (rev. 2.1)
Antec 300
XFX ATI 4870 1GB
Hard Drive Western Digital Caviar Blue 500
Intel Core 2 Duo 8400
OCZ Stealth XStream 600W PSU
OCZ 4GB PC2-8500 Gold Edition

I have a few questions.

The first one is, how well will this handle crysis. I have done alot of looking around and it seems as though it should play it fine. However nothing liek asking real people.

Im tempted to upgrade from XP to Vista. Is this a good idea? I have read around and the general consensus is that Vista is a good 5 or more frames slower on the same graphics settings. But lots of games nowdays do have the capabilites to play on very high settings only on Vista. (such as crysis)

So really my question is, will my computer setup be able to play Crysis on very high settings on Vista relatively smoothly. And is there a visual difference between Xp on high settigns and Vista on high settings.

And yes, I do know about the DX 10 on XP hack but im not sure i want to go there.

Thanks in advance!

well, see how crysis plays on XP first, if crysis plays good or better on XP than vista, ur best bet is 2 stick with XP, but, thats up 2 u!

My system runs Crysis perfectly. My system:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
1 x 2048 DDR2800
ATI HD 4850 512MB
Gigabyte EP45-UD3P Mainboard
RaidMax RX-630SS 630W PSU

I run XP on it and it runs it just swimmingly on max (XP) settings. Never noticeably dropped in frames ever. Only thing I notice is occasionally I see little squares on materials in game, but I suspect that to be just a driver problem.

I don't know how much different it looks on Vista, but I do see room for improvement on XP, like some ground textures being disgustingly low res. Not much of a concern to me though.

I don't think Crysis is really all that spectacular in graphics, to be honest.

Vista's a nice upgrade. I'd recommend it if you're going for a quad core.

I have the same Q6600 as Xavious and it runs everything nicely.

One big advantage for Vista x64 in this case is that it can recognize and use all 4 GBs of the RAM, XP x86 would only be able to recognize 2 GBs by default, 2.5 or 3 at most.

XP x64 does exist, but for the sake of support I'd pick Vista over XP for 64-bit.

And there is an option that I'm going with myself; use XP 32-bit and then buy Windows 7 x64.

Thanks for the info guys!

and Xavious! Crysis imho looks absolutely stunning on max graphics.

I wouldn't advise spending money on Vista. Windows 7 is coming out in a bit and everything I hear about it is that it has everything Vista has, but without all the drawbacks. I compare 32-bit Vista to 32-bit XP on the same machien (dual boot) and noticed a 5%-10% drop in FPS.
My friend insists that the difference between highest settings in Crysis (using DX10) is noticably prettier than than high settings (using DX9). He even showed me the difference, but I couldn't see any change. Personally, I'm happy enough with boring ol' XP. However, if you do get Vista, I would recommend the cheapest version; you don't need a shark swimming in circles on your desktop (ok, I admit I'm a bit of a minimalist).

This thread can't get any better. Go with this suggestion from Bjossi (although I'm using x64 XP and I have no trouble, in fact, it's better with rendering stuff).

Yeah, go with 7, but not at launch. Wait for the bugs and stuff to be ironed out first.

Chavez, what the hell is your sig from? It's hilarious and strangely hypnotic.

Its indoor areas look like shit though.

WOW! I completely dissagree! Oh well...

Hmmm... I think it looks more photorealistic indoors wheras it just looks plain awesome outside.

And thanks a bunch guys! I think that I will wait for 7 as that seems to be the most popular idea. If i was to get Vista it would be 64 bit to make the msot of my 4Gb's of ram. Ive also heard that there is a noticable frame increase with 64bit vista over 32 bit XP (which is what i have ATM)

The outside areas are Crysis' strongest point graphically speaking, the indoor areas are not by a long shot. Though there are a few exceptions, like the insides of the mothership.

Well. They may be the strongest technically. But jsut because the indoor areas arent cluttered does not make them bad. I would say they look pretty damn realistic.

But this is a mute point. I am trying to decide between Vista 64 Bit XP 32 bit or windows 7 ATM.

Who said anything about cluttered? I was talking about the lighting and the way the various surface types react to it. No game has done it realistically, including Crysis, but at least some games managed to make the unrealism look appealing from an artistic perspective.

And by the way, Windows 7.

Hey. Take a look at this link and tell me what you think of their opinions. They are very Pro-Vista and I would like you guys to comment on what you think of what they are saying.

You could have been more specific with that link, an entire forum is a big place to look for OS debates.

But I did find your thread, so no worries. I stick to what I said earlier and I say you should stick with what OS you have right now and then buy Windows 7 x64 when it comes out. It makes little sense to buy Vista when a highly improved version of it is around the corner.

It's from Clannad, the series. Strangely, it's a dramatic anime, taken from the original anime movie, which is even more dramatic and made, at least 2 people I know of, cry at the ending.
