... and no, I'm not referring to the pirates who recently received the head shots from the Navy Seals who received the "Headhunter" award, but it seems somebody finally did something about the pirate bay... kinda.

One of the comments said that the pirate bay is no different from Google, but isn't that comparing apples and oranges? Google is a general search engine that can be used to search for torrents by inlcuding something like "torrent download" in the search, but the pirate bay is designed specifically for the categorization and distribution of torrents, right?

for some reason, torrents don't work on my computer. :(
so i don't have a real opinion about this.

Torrents don't work without using a bittorrent client.

I think the charges will be dropped if they go for a retrial. Torrents are not illegal and neither is a torrent tracker. They should be prosecuting the actual criminals, which are the ones sharing copyrighted material in their torrents.

Patience is the key. I've learned that ever since downloading my first torrent last year.

uummmm....I don't want to be a stick-in-the-mud, but please refrain from discussing any illegal downloads on this site.

I have to however say, torrents are not illegal, but most of the material obtainable via this protocol/method etc. is. Thus the bad image torrents have gained.

I still think that particular court case was just trying to make an example, and I suspect it will fail on appeal. I doubt that case would have even made it to trial in the USA.

But I do understand the side of the companies whose material is being distributed via these systems. I just think they need to target the source, not the method of distribution.

Not patient enough, most likely. Of course some settings might be incorrect as well. But that is very hard to troubleshoot since days can pass without anyone sharing the same file has a bittorrent client running.

Keep in mind that if you are torrenting pirated software for free, any download speed is worth every penny, right? However, I find that most legal torrents (Linux distros, for example) have good speeds.

I get terrible download speeds until a peer that lives in the same country as me fires up a bittorrent client. It will jump as high as 100+ KB/s from less than 1 in a matter of seconds.
