what if: GSC Game World (creators of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series) would use Ubisoft's Dunia Engine for their next game? that would be interesting, wouldn't it? what do you think about it? |

http://www.incrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=27585 Quote: In addition, GSC Game World has concrete plans for Stalker 2 that is most likely on a different engine than the previously used in-house X-Ray engine should be based. According to rumors, the developer team to a license for the Crytek CryEngine 3 of interest.

if it's true than they have picked the wrong one. i'm not saying Cry Engine 3 is bad but Dunia Engine is better for this type of game (open world). Cry Engine 3 doesn't have such an dynamic environment as Dunia. question: is the s.t.a.l.k.e.r. series more similar to Crysis or Far Cry 2? well i think Far Cry 2... there are a few people who think FC2 is on the Cry Engine but it's the Dunia Engine. (personally i think it is the best engine so far) |

What you mean by dynamic environment ?, respawning NPCs day and night cycles ? I'm pretty sure if it's for that any contemporary engine is much better than the Dunia engine ... But FC 2 is a well made game but some physics and graphics aren't better than actual engines |

Dynamic environment is an environment that "lives", in other words it changes and evolves without any player interference, very much like STALKER. I'm not really sure how the engine has anything to do with that directly though (key word: directly). Why else could modders vastly change the environment dynamics in STALKER without any access to the engine source? Simple answer; it was not built directly into the engine, a smart move of the programmers in my opinion. |

I think I'd rather have the engine that allowed for better gameplay in the end. Which that one is, I don't know. I do like the Cry Engine's ability to actually shoot and punch trees down, though. That can be a bit of gameplay if you knock them down on roadways and block paths and such. |

All modern engines utilize good physics processing, the newer ones making good use of nVidia's PhysX co-processor on their newer video cards. |

Dunia Engine does not allow for shooting large tree down. The most it allowed was the limbs to be shot/hacked down in FC2. Large trees were indestructible besides being burned. Even then, only leaves burned away. |

That was a feature that was coded in. With code you can get that in the Dunia engine as well. |

Well considering I don't take apart game source code often (in fact, I only do this with UT2k4!), it'd be hard for me to know that one. |

Modders only have access to a small part of UT2's source code. Anyway, physics is an engine thing, which props react to physics is not, the engine only sets the groundwork for physics and does the processing itself, it is the designers' job to put the engine and its features to good use. A good and accurate physics engine should have no trouble working with oddly shaped props like trees. |

Well then apparently Ubisoft didn't care for the idea of making large trees falling over. Only explanation I could give is that it would be too much for the game to be put on consoles if it had that falling trees thing in it. Potentially the PS3 could attempt it, but really, it might have been the reason that wasn't put in.... or Ubi was too lazy. |

it probably was because of the consoles. FC2 was supposed to have a lot more and be far better than it is now. but it all changed when Ubi decided to make it for the consoles too. when creating a high-end game (like Crysis was) developers should forget about consoles entirely. |

They will only rarely. Even for high-end games, they'll lower them so console can run them as well. You gotta think about the markets for consoles, they are a huge chunk of money to be tapped into. |

Just getting rid of consoles would pretty much kill the gaming industry. But it is true, the so-called "next gen" consoles (which didn't even make sense when they first got released) are starting to bottleneck the PC versions of games. And if they don't bottleneck the PC will show its power, for example my brother told me his jaw almost dropped to the floor when he saw a GTA 4 savegame load in less than 10 seconds on my PC compared to the 1+ minute on the PS3. |

Ah Ok an environment that "lives", that's not a specificity to engine like you said, i think the same and I'm pretty sure and certain of that. Unfortunately game companies wouldn't forget the consoles because consoles is big money, even bigger than PC

Real Lifeâ„¢ has a pretty nice engine. if you kill someone it will dynamically change the environment. It's a long game by the way. Unfortunately if you die you can't load the previous game...
I don't know if it's a bug or a feature though. |

Real Life runs on an engine that is not even close to be fully understood; the ultimate physics model of the universe. |

and you cant save your progress ether. i remember dieing several times and the fact that you have to START FROM THE BEGINNING just plain pisses me off.
and each time i restart, its never the same. (adds replay value )

Maybe the environmental dynamics will in the near or far future introduce guns that relate to BW ones.

another thing that sucks about the real Life Engine is that its Impossible to mod.

Yeah, because all the features we could possibly imagine are already there, either haven't been discovered yet or built into the imagination sub-system. |

Normally the best engine is an engine that could simulate the effects of the Real life engine and have virtual capabilities

Yeah.. The ultimate engine would be, when every aspect looked like real life, was fast, easy to mod, aahh cheap!, and has support for ANYTHING!!... Bring on the God Engine!!.. |
