Here's a little thought experiment that has been running through my mind for a bit and I thought it would be interesting to mention. It may put some of your unused mental capacity to use, like Prime95 for the brain. In many sci-fi videos and novels, you often see the idea of telepathy cropping up here and there. For example, in the show “Babylon 5†|

You'd still get something like the Borg. Individuals would simply be "assimilated" into the group consciousness at birth. Or conception. Or wherever between that neurons start firing. |

If that's the case, then I I guess I don't know the borg as well as I had thought; I thought the borg were all directly ordered around by a seperate consciousness. Anyways, another thought occured to me. I think it would be safe to assume that in this hypothetical situation, there would be no government or economy. There would be no crime or law, nor would there be any need to track how much work a person has done or how much goods and services a person is entitled to, right? |

I disagree. due to evolution there would be a range of people with a range of abilities. There would be some people who struggle to even see how someone is feeling; others who can manipulate and change someone else completely; and some people who would be able to separate themselves from the collective. This would invoke fear in the collective, members just disappearing (imagine part of your body just disappearing, how scared would you be) through fear people would "pass the buck" and a government would be formed; people would not know what the government is doing as they would not want to know thus allowing for corruption. On to economy: as said above there would be people with a more enhanced telepathic abilities, these people would have a section of their mind which would be entirely unique to them; this part of them would want to be "higher up" than those who struggle to do what is simple to the rest of the race. Crime and Law: similar to government, people would break free. War: again, people with more enhanced powers would want to be separate from those with limited powers and vice versa (not how they are spelled I know) this would create conflict which would lead to war... Raziel P.S of course, this is assuming that these beings are like humans, if they started out more civilized and accepting then humans then this may work... P.P. S I love these sort of scenarios

Bump bada bump bump. Ok, seriously. I had a thought as a sequel to my original. Could one argue that humanity is approaching (but still very far from) this state of existnce. I'm not trying to convince you of this or try to prove this beyond a resonable doubt, but form a quick glance, it would seem that the individual members of humanity are becoming more and more interconnected through cell phones and internet uses. I would think it is almost axiomatic to say that there are certain basic moral principles that are shared by almost all people, such as the value of life, the need to help others (to varying degrees), the desire to be right, and the desire to convince others you are right. You see such trends on forums, twitter, blogs, youtube comments, and so on. So, do you think humanity is approaching a central consciousness, even though we are still far from true mental uniformity? |
