Over the last few weeks, here in Australia we have had some of the hottest, driest and windiest days ever recorded. Today, for example, here in Melbourne, where i live, the temperature was recorded at 47c, the hottest it has ever gotten. All this leads to one thing, bush fires. Over the last month and a bit, thousands of acres have been burnt to nothing, destroying many houses and taking lives. Today, there have been reports of at least 9 major fires in north, to north-eastern victoria. One man in his 40s was severely burnt today and had to be airlifted to a hospital. CFA had reported that many of it's tankers had also been destroyed. Some family members of mine, happen to live near the fires, some even going near the end of their street! However, until... 19 minutes ago, there was expected to be a cool change and a little rain, but later the wind would pick up and change direction to the south west, where i live. The conditions are said to be the worst we have ever been in, even worse than in 1983

well, the fires seem to have subsided quite a bit, they're relatively undercontrol now. What i didn't know until today was that the winds at the fires were blowing at around 100kph or 60mph or something like that, which is why they spread so fast.

So far, i think that like 800 houses were destroyed and 80 people killed. Also, where I live, the temperature was recorded at 49c

Yipes, 49 degrees is hot. Glad to hear that none of your relatives got injured.

How do they keep brushfires under control? Controlled burning of other locations?

normally they would use controlled burns, although this time because the winds were so strong, as soon as it started it just got so big so fast, also the embers flew for miles starting spotfires which become bigger fires again. So far the death toll is at 130 and there are still 30+ fires still out of control from what i've heard

I live on the Central Coast, we have be plaugued by the occasional fire, but never near my house. All we see of it is distant smoke on the horizon.
