So, I had this weird dream. I don't often remember dreams, but here it is. Have you ever had the kind of dream where you are in infinity, but infinity collapses forcing you to fall off of infinity and into an ocean of a greater infinity, which is in itself a singularity inside of infinity? No? Strange... The few times I actually remember a dream, they never make sense until I apply calculus and derive them a few times. Did I ever mention I love and hate calculus Perhaps it was inspired by this little puzzle my brother told me about: Imagine that there is a bus and every seat is labeled by a unique rational number (Any number that can be represented as a fraction) and there is a person sitting in every seat. Let's say that there is a seat for every rational number. There are infinite rational numbers (1, 2, 3, 5.6, 5.66, 5.666, 5.667, etc.); therefore, there are an infinite number of seats on this bus. Now, imagine that the bus pulls up to a hotel for the bus occupants to spend the night. There is a room for every unique irrational number (a number that has an unending string of decimal places, like pi or e). There is an infinite number of irrational number. So, the bottom line question is: are there enough rooms for the bus occupants to each have his/her own room? Will there be extra rooms? It turns out that there are various degrees of infinity. If I recall right, there are more irrational numbers and rational, so there would be an infinite amount of extra rooms in the hotel after all the bus occupants get a room. |
