Post subject:  motherboard power supply wire controls

so say you just installed a new fan/hd/anything that takes power from one of the 4-pin connectors on your motherboard/power supply. can you tell your motherboard to stop supplying that wire with juice (so you dont have to open your case and manually unplug the device?) im asking because i bought an exhaust port type fan (doesnt have an exhaust, its just two fans that plug into the back of the computer) and its running ALL the time, the only control for its speed is a little slide bar on the outside in the back of the computer, but i cant turn it off from there. its always on and its right above my gpu, and im not sure which way my gpu fan blows (i think it should be towards the actual gpu, which means it sucks the air the fan is blowing), and i think this should be fine since it wouldnt put the gpu fan under extra stress. but if thats not the case, and the fan is blowing away from the gpu, then they are cancelling each other out (the PCI fan is MUCH stronger), and its probably gonna burn out my fan, so i wanna use it only when i need to (it does cool the gpu down by a few degrees but that could just be the PCI fan overpowering the gpu fan...i dont know) anyway, i need a way to turn it off easily, because the only way right now is to open the case and disconnect the wire...

You could try installing SpeedFan and see if that can allow you to control your fan speeds. If that does not work, then you could buy a fan controller. If you decide on the fan controller, do some research first becasuse not all support the 4-pin molex connectors or go down to 0% power. However, I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811995016&cm_re=sunbeam_fan_controller-_-11-995-016-_-Product and know that it supports 4-pin molex power plugs and has the full range of 0%-100% power.

One other thing you could do if you have the parts lying around is to solder a switch and mount that on your computer. Connect one side of the switch to common ground and the other side to the +12V. You can see the pinout http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i165/m00gs/braiding_guide/Diagram.png. Mount the switch in the side of your computer case and you can even make it look kinda professional.
