If I read this correctly, one does not need to date Cliffy to get access to the Unreal Engine 3 technology anymore.

I think this might come in very handy for Runestorm. ;)
(Imagine the possibilities...)

Yeah, it's real :)

I'm dowloading it, I'm very curious about that new lightmass technology and the improvements over the engine version used in UT3.

You can even sell games, I think.

Yeah, but I think Epic would want some of the profit from selling UDK-developed games.

Holy shit. :|

Never thought I'd see this in my lifetime...now what's the point of MSUC?

Maybe you'll get the million but you simply won't have to spend it on an UE3 license anymore.

i like it when companies make good decisions. ut3 is a moderate to good game, but the capabilities of its engine are really amazing. it would be nice if companies just made games as a demo for their engine and then released their engine to the public. it would mean slightly less work for them, but i think a lot of really, really good games would be developed by fans, then when they sell, the parent company gets a portion of the profit. its more profitable too probably, just gotta do the math. woot for epic.

Hats off to Epic! This is brilliant for modders like us! :) I'm so pleased that guys like Valve and Epic are opening up the industry for indie devs and modders. It will help hugely..

AS for the MSU. If you win, you don't have to pay royalties for selling ;) Plus the handy 50K prize is ok to have in your back pocket :P

SB, it would be cool if you could tell us what this might mean for Runestorm. Are you guys fantasizing about making use of the UDK in the future, even separating Crucible from UT3?

Well, the possibility of being able to sell their stand-alone game (even if it does mean paying a few royalties) is more or less a dream come true for RS.

I foresee a commercial game in the future from RS ;)

But, right now the devs are very focused MSUC as they have a deadline for the last entry to meet. But what they have done for the last entry, I'm sure will lead the way for a move to the UDK.

With rumors that there won't be another UT release for many years to come, I'm guessing this is their way of opening up the modding community and at the same time make some revenue out of the modding community!

Wait...this is the actual, proper unreal engine? As in, you can make stuff without havng to tie it down to UT3?

Correct

Although I am sure there are a few minor differences.
But, essential it is the whole package needed to produce an entire stand-alone game using the UE3.

Next, we wait for Valve to do the tie in, so we can use steam as a distribution platform. That would solve all the distribution and sales issues :)

Actually, It has even more features than UT3 version of the engine. The UDK has the Lightmass, Destructible static meshes, and a lot of things that Epic announced a while back.

Man, DM-Deck looks beautiful with that Lightmass. Take a look at it. It's awesome.

Oh My Wow. Does the green goo have light bleeding?

Also, is it possible to run UT3 in this and play it with soft shadow and fractal meshes and stuff? Because that would be...almost as awesome as BW.

This is HUGE! news for RS, it means we can go commerical no matter what!..

Thank god for Epic and Valve, with both steam, and the UT3 UDK, we can finally make our dream come true...

I never thought it would become this easy to get into the market. Before now, it was very closed..

Winning the MSUC, will make it that much sweeter...

You guys would be far from screwed without UE3, it may be a powerful engine but it ain't the only one, iD Software for example will be releasing iD Tech 4 for free before too long.

OMG, that would be great. If you do though give your game a real settings menu. not like UT3s console menu.

I just don't know why they don't do that for the oldest ones, they still great engines and I think it will be better for them to get a "second life"

If you did a stand alone crucible. I would surely get it when the servers start poping up.
