I feel bad for the Austrailians, they can't get the new mortal kombat by any means.

Man, thats ridiculous. I thought Australians were all tough and unshakable with iron stomachs. What would a piddly little video game be to such people? Apparently their government thinks otherwise...

I sure hope freedom-ish remains somewhere in the world...

Maybe it will boost sales in the rest of the world.
Billy: "Hey this game looks cool!"
Bob: "Oh, thats the only thing that'll sell in Australia these days..."
Billy: "Eeuw! On second thoughts, I don't want a game meant for 10 year olds!"

Haha, yeah, weird Aussie government, mind you South Africa doesn't allow Grand Theft Auto, well at least on steam.. ;)

Please, Gang violence is just around the corner in South Africa, the game isn't going to do anything... :D

Germans have also a similar policy toward games, I personally find that stupid because the greatest crap in the matter of wars were done much before having games such as manhunt, postal and mortal kombat, soldier of fortune, GTA and many others.

Violence or no violence, in any form of entertainment, is irrelevant. Unstable human beings might erupt at any time, the healthy people will successfully discern reality from fiction and understand that their actions have consequences.

Politicians are using their power to enforce their personal principles on a country of millions of people, it has absolutely nothing to do with (the lack of) objective facts that prove games can break people's reality check, it is just some grumpy old suits who don't like violence in their entertainment and decide their opinion should be universal.

I am glad this is not the case here in my country, although our government has been on a banning spree in recent years, banning strip clubs altogether and banning people under 18 from using tanning salons, to name examples. I don't know what is scarier; the bans themselves or the fact that the people in charge are under the illusion that banning magically makes problems go away.

Hah, yeah. I'm all for banning tanning salons for minors. Who wants bright orange, UV irradiated people walking around anyway.

As long as people don't hurt others in their decisions, it shouldn't be anyone else's business what they do to their body, especially the government's. Of course it is a good idea to limit minors' access to tanning salons since they may not understand what the process is all about, but the keyword is 'limit'. Education and limits could improve the situation, a complete ban seems excessive to me.

Moving away from tanning salons... you make some very good points. There are no statistics or evidence to support the notion that violence in games cause violent behavior, in fact, the stats tilt the other way. This sort of action is apparently the result of the usual ignorant fear of closed-minded people that have no experience of what they are dealing with.
What is considered 'objectionable' is very much a matter of opinion and varies from place to place and time to time. Having different opinions is fine, but what I find certainly objectionable is that the opinions of some should be made law.
Banning is a blunt, primitive and ineffective technique used out of fear and incomprehension. Still I suppose it is worth noting that some progress has been made to move beyond the dark ages, they are only banning now instead of burning in most places...

There is another issue that they have forgotten here and that is that with games banned, they will need to find a new reason for all their problems and and new package for their guilt. Certainly these people would not want to face the less palatable truth that they are part of their problems and that the solution rests with them... When all evil is banned, you'll have only yourself left to blame for your screwed up kids, what then?

Precisely! :D

People can't accept blame, thats the fundamental problem, they always gotta shirk responsibility to some other organisation or product so they can continue living in their little ivory towers..... ;)

Even if games did cause problems why is the government playing mommy and daddy.
I think this will just make the game more desirable.
Hmm marketing strategy?????

Haha, queue up the Dead Space 2 "Your parents will hate this" strategy. I bet that game's not in Australia. ;)

[Pointless correction]
It was "Your mom will hate DS2". Dad would probably like it a lot better.

Well then I pointlessly correct you in that it was hate and not have. Image I thought it was a kind of dumb marketing strategy though, so I switched it to 'parents'.

Edit: Great, you edited it.
Edit 2: And I edited my reply before you had a chance to respond. Hah!
