This is a combination of three mods that wok out perfectly:

-Ballistic Weapons
-Fraghouse Invasion v5
-Unreal 1 Game (by Dots)

I sometimes write a lot, so I'll try to keep it short. Ish.

A guy named Dots (or .:..: )took the original Unreal, ported it over to UT2004, and in the process, added to / ruined it, depending on who you ask.

He has a bonus level I cheated to play, which is Doom styled. As such, he has all the enemies too (along with a plasma-gun wielding commando.)

Fraghouse Invasion has a Doom-styled map, the first one, Hangar. There's been a few different rooms added to it, which kind of stinks, as I'd prefer just a straight-up Hangar myself, but you take what you can get.

You can use the Doom Mutator in two ways: Use it to replace the Invasion monsters with Doom ones, or use it to replace the Unreal single player game monsters with Doom ones. I chose Invasion. I want to play Unreal, not Doomreal. But "Doomvasion" is quite fun.

Then I tried using the mutator to replace the FHI monsters so I could play on the Hangar map. No dice.

So I started a regular Invasion game with the Doom mutator on, then typed "open fhi-hanger-e1m1" (he spelled "hangar" wrong) and wouldn't you know it, I can play on that map...

Then I thought "Gee... the Ballistic mod can replace most of the Doom weapons, can't it?"

I figured 1920x1080 was too big to link, so when I was converting from BMP to JPG, I halved the pic size too. They're 960x540.

If you want a "true-ish" Ballistic Doom experience, you need to establish a ground rule for yourself. NO using a weapon in a way you couldn't in Doom. This means no laser on the GRS9, no laser beam mode on the E23 Viper, no bashing monsters with M763 swipes, etc. etc. If you can't do it in Doom, you can't do it here. Back in the day, our guns fired one way, and dammit, we LIKED it. Burst fire on the GRS9 is acceptable, simply because it's pretty weak otherwise.

Or don't, and just do whatever you want. :P

Your pistol replacement, the GRS9. No lasering his head off. Zombies fall in one hit, Lost Souls and the shotgun bitch dies in two, Imps die in three, and then the next step up, Cacodemons, take about 15-20 17. You probably won't want to use this on them, and save it for the light cleanup here.

Ah, your trusty shotgun. Even though Ballistic's shotgun can't fire clear across a map like Doom's can, it packs a bigger punch up close. Grinds Cacodemons up in two hits, anything lower than that in one. Even fairly useful against Hell Knights and Revenants, only requiring three or four. This weapon alone can take you clear through wave 6.

Your Chaingun replacement is, uh, well... take your pick. M50, Jackal, XMK5, M353, M925. Any machine gun that fires fast. Just don't be playing with your darts, cameras, sticky grenades, or whatever. You're firing bullets or you're not using it. Personally, I choose the M50. It's just overall got a cool model, good firing speed, and decent enough damage.

Things start to go a bit pear-shaped here... in Doom the Rocket Launcher fired crazy fast (for a rocket launcher) but in Ballistic, the closest you can get is the G5, or if you want something slightly different, the BORT. Same effect, things go boom. This does more damage, I think. No lasers or mortars allowed, you're dumbfiring this sucker, if you want the Doom play. The super slow reload time coupled with the fact that it seems sometimes the rockets clip through the enemies (so aim at their feet) means you probably won't want to use this. It does do good damage though, I've killed Hell Knights in one hit. Let's see you do THAT, Doom rocket launcher!

You can even replace the chainsaw with the Dark Star's saw, as long as you don't fire it. "What do you get when you cross my saw and Hell's demon spawn? Food for 200 million people."

Sadly, we have to end there, as there doesn't seem to be a suitable BFG replacement. I can't think of anything. Perhaps the HAMR? But it isn't energy based... sadface. You're SOL on that one.

Whaaaa? You couldn't find a BFG, rocket launcher, chainsaw, or chaingun replacement??

Ahem! EVPC 9000, REX Shock & Awe, XLR8 Chainsword, and the XMB-500 man! Coach gun can replace the double barrel too! Those guns were practically designed to be Doomlike. :P

Yeah, I don't have any of those, just the latest Ballistic mod. If those are yours, I'm waiting until the pack is done. I can be patient :p

This is cool. I wish I had the time to learn how to redo this game with current technology and graphics. Theirs probably some legalities their, but......
If I remember right it came on five 3.5" floppies. I had the Bill Clinton mod, mods have definitely changed since then LOL.

What legalities? People have been modding Doom forever. I don't think ID cares if you mod a 16 year old game. :p

I believe he's referring to the idea of recreating Doom independently to bring it up to par with modern graphical expectations, in which case there would be legal issues - see cases relating to StarCraft, where mod teams have been shut down for attempting to recreate it using newer engines.

There was a nice one on C&C generals, but the team was shut down ...
oh I think it should happen with many projects or attempts to recreate games ...
A dude even tried to do SiN in the UDK but the owners of ritual entertainment shut down the project ...

I can see why moders and such making a newer version of someone else's game would be an issue... ;)

It's the company's intellectual property and they don't want some people stealing their idea and then beating them to it while they are busy working really hard on a proper official version, that would just suck!... :)

Wait... you can play the original Unreal in UT2k4?!

I'm downloading this. I don't care if the graphics suck, this just oozes nostalgia - I loved Unreal to pieces. And now I can use Ballistic Weapons with it... or at least TRY to. I'll have to look into how it sets up weapons.

eh, well... you may or may not be able to save. You might be able to use basic mutators, but I tried to use some, and then I'd save the game, try to load it, and it wouldn't find the save file I just made. Anti-cheat measures I think. You can use basic mutators like regeneration erc. but something like Ballistic, I wouldn't think you can save the game. Let us know if you can though.

Hmmm... Sometimes I can't save games for unknown reason, but it doesn't prevent me from playing even while using Ballistic Loadout mutator.

I've got that too, but you can save in a second slot, then when it says "can't save on this slot" for your secondf one, you can re-save on the first. So two save slots pretty much defeats that little "protection". Dots seems to be something of a control freak, apparently. He won't let you cheat or you get locked out of opening new maps, you can't save on a game slot for whatever reason I haven't determined yet... but I asked around a bit and found how you can unlock all the maps from the start so you don't have to worry about Ghost mode (which you may need later due to a bug) locking you out of the rest of the game, if you're interested.

That might be a good idea.

Also, how would one replace the weapons in-game? The ballistic mutator doesn't work properly...

You're asking the wrong guy, I have zero clue. I'm not sure you can, the Unreal 1 Game gametype seems to be its own little thing. I have an Advanced Regeneration mutator that's supposed to override whether or not a gametype uses adrenaline (so you can use adrenaline in any gametype that doesn't normally) but even that option doesn't work.

I wrote my own replacer when I played this with BW, but because of the nature of the game I just made it replace each weapon with a single BW weapon.

Most mutators will not work with Unreal 1 game because it uses different Pawns and PlayerControllers. If you want something to work with it, you'll have to adapt it yourself.
