There is a funny mutator who does body awareness in UT2004
The results even if they aren't the best due to third person models of most weapons not being good at all.
I tried with BW since BW is one of the rare mods who have well detailed weapons even in third person.
The results are good in therms of model shown but the character in third person doesn't place very well the weapons in caparison with the FP view, but it's not bad.
At least firing with the XMV 500 is much better than with the stock UT variant who doesn't spin.
A good screen can show the mutie at work

A friend of mine was working on a similar project but he decided it looked 'too shit for public release' and abandoned it.

It looked exactly the same as this screenshot. I'll show him. He'll kick himself.

Where'd you find this, by the way?

Thanks. Sometimes I get the urge to go trawling through there as well. It's how I managed to find an almost complete set of UT99 maps for 2k4.

I'll check it out. The only problem is that there are going to be no reload animations. Now who was it said they were working on those...?

good question and I don't know if this can help to see bugs on third person models

Tried this just now and didn't seem to work well. Are there any config options?

Yeah it doesn't work very well, but that's because of the 3rd person movement in UT2004.
I didn't find any option there unfortunately.
Also it depends of your issues with it. Because some of them are due to the character moves.

There's a very good reason it doesn't work, 3P meshes have no bones to animate, and the detail is reduced, so you end up with one crappy result..... :(

If you made 3P meshes that had all the FP rigging and detail, then it would work fine, but it's not really worth it.... :)

Does it mean if we want that the characters mantle, lean and such things, we need to create a specific model with skin to do so ?

Not necessarily a new model, just a default 2K4 biped skeleton with all the new animations you want exported with it... ;)

All bones need to be positioned and named the same as the default 2K4 characters, so you'd have to make the skeleton from scratch yourself(unless you can download it) and then animate it... :)

You can append animations to existing models dynamically - ChaosUT does it for their Duel gametype, in order to make proper melee animations.

Yes. You just need a skeleton which matches the stock skeletons in order to append it. I'm not sure if Epic ever distributed their UT2k4 character meshes though. If not, you'd just have to remake a rig.

The rigs are available in Maya and 3DSMAX format. I have the Maya rigs.

If TP characters held the weapons more properly this would be awesome.
but this adds a crapload of work for graphical details I believe.

Then you just have to do the animations(if its rigged correctly), if only motion capture technology was easy to get, but you'll have to make do with manual, good luck making it really quality... ;)

Haha, if I could animate I'd lend a hand to Kelly, but unfortunately my immeasurable ( ::) ) talents don't run that far... xD

Usually I use Blender to animate, but could never get it to work with the 2k4 skeletons which I think I have in Maya format. A while ago I got the .psk files to work with Milkshape, but lost them and can't remember how I did it. It was probably easy, else I wouldn't have been able to.

I was thinking of maybe putting in a similar system to how Red Orchestra handled third-person reload animations at one point, but after doing some digging I found that the animations were pretty much done by guesswork. You have to animate the weapon upside down and calculate where the magazine should be and when with no reference. Unsurprisingly I couldn't be bothered.

They should do a mut where you can only see your legs. And if you shoot your legs, you damage yourself.
