I don't know how many of you keep up with international news, but this is a momentous achievement! (Unless you're a terrorist.) Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al Qaeda, has reportedly been killed in a fire fight in the last couple of hours.

If this news is legitimate, and that bastard has finally been brought to justice, this will be an amazing day. I hope he has a nice, fun stay in hell without those 42 virgins they keep going on about.

he caused so much chaos and killed so many people for NOTHING.

he dosnt deserve to be buried he deserved to be thrown over a bridge and be done with.

I will salute the man that put a bullet inbetween his eyes a million times, yes the war with terror still persists but least we have killed the bastard in charge!

in all seriousness he really deserved to die and the cheek to turn around at the end and go can i surrender.

what did he think was going to happen when he surrendered, DEATH PENALTY!

So really its really sad that he hid in a cave for that long and dosnt even die with pride.

if he had a grave i would certainly go out of my way to spit on it.

For me the death of bin laden is much more the death of the Terrorist Icon than the rest.
Because terrorists are still active, and the death of a person is no way a good thing, but I'm still happy because this will reduce that fervor towards Al Quaeda that some people had.

Sure the revenge won't resurrect all the dead people and all the innocents that were killed before, but can help preventing further acts of that kind. Mostly putting fear on other terrorists groups

they did a Dna test and he's as dead as a doornail

so there's not much they can work with.

i think they throw him into the sea so no religious fanatics would dig up his body or something.

they will definatly throw a parade.

Lol you dont really know much about him do you?

He was a figure head, Much like the queen, and didnt have much to say, yes he did kill people, but defo not as much as the guys directly below him, the actual leaders.

I'm in agreement with grizzly, the bastards dead and i'm damn happy! SEALs did their job damn well too! i'd love to shake the guys hand who shot him.

Although a persons death is nothing to celebrate, he wasn't a person, he was a monster.

So he's dead, is this going to make him a martyr? Because I don't think the death of a major terrorist icon is going to make the rest of the terrorists calm down.

But still, good riddance! Just hoping there isn't some sort of major retaliation to come from it...

He was killed by US forces, therefore he's automatically a martyr as his death was a direct result of his masterminding of terrorist attacks.

I think it's very difficult to demoralise people who are committed to an ideology as al-Qaeda are. People may die, but ideas can never be killed, and the idea is the real problem. Read up a bit more about the structure of al-Qaeda and you find that the various branches in each country operate mostly with autonomy, so it's likely that al-Qaeda lost little in terms of their capabilities or ability to execute attacks, and gained as good an excuse as any in their eyes to push forward with any attacks they may be planning, as various world leaders have already warned us all.

I can't imagine killing this guy making any difference except bringing closure for the thousands of families who lost loved ones thanks to his successfully executed plans. The war on terrorism will continue. Perhaps his death shows that once you are a high priority target you will be killed, even if it takes 10 years.

My flatmates here are all pretty skeptical of this news. Immediately jumping on the "ZOMG COVER UP" bandwagon.

They seem to think... (their opinions, not mine):

A: 10 years of searching means the US armed forces was too incompetent to find the guy so they gave up and pretended he is dead
B: Dumping the body off-shore just means they didn't have the body (They would have taken photo's right?)
C: Osama was just a scapegoat for a more sinister plot by the US government anyway...and some other 9/11, inside job, oil, money, yadda yadda whatever

I didn't really know what to say to them at the time, I wasn't prepared to argue a matter that I had only just heard about though in retrospect I probably should have brought up Occams razor at some point :x

If these guys were saying stuff like that around my American family members, they would have been mobbed

One thing we can all agree on though, whether or not he is dead or just chilling in a mansion in upstate New York...someone is gonna replace him in due time.

yes, there is going to be skeptists but thats why there saying there going to release pictures and prove that he is dead.

people also say that 9/11 was a plot by the american goverment!
which i really do think is bullshit because i watched the video of 9/11 with my own eyes and the goverment wouldnt have done something like that people already know that the goverment own everything so doing 9/11 would have just been cruel.

so al-qaeda is behind the plot and osama was the man that ordered 9/11 therefore been the number one shithead on the fbi's most wanted THE MAN WAS PURE EVIL and he didnt deserve to be shot in the head he deserved ALOT WORSE.

Personally I was skeptical of this too, largely because I first heard it from someone else who heard it from someone else.

I still think its possible it was a body double, but that's merely because I haven't bothered to read up on all the details yet, not because of some crazy conspiracy theory, but because I think a high priority figure like him would definitely have body doubles.

If he wasn't dead, and we just said so, we'd be screwed. When Osama made a video proving he was alive, we'd look like complete idiots. I don't think Obama would say such a thing without absolute proof.

As for the photos, I think they should be released. One gunshot to the head is nothing compared to watching people jump out of buildings or be crushed under falling debris. And it will (maybe) prove something to the skeptics.

I'm not quite sure about releasing photos of the body. It's not going to placate any conspiracy idiots, since they're just going to claim it's a fake anyway. I mean look at the birthers' reaction to Obama's birth certificate.

Plus, headshots are pretty damn gruesome, and the release might just make certain extremist Muslims angrier and spur more violence. Remember the Abu Ghraib pics? And you just know some asshole's going to put that on a T-shirt. Of course, most reasonable people would agree that detainee abuse is a despicable and horrific act, while shooting Osama in the face is not.


As far as any lasting effects are concerned, I don't think this will have much of an effect on al-Qaeda's ability to operate. Heck, it'll probably spur them into more attacks, which is why they they've been beefing up security on base. Even in death Osama's a pain in the ass.

I have no doubt in the validity of the claim that he's dead, I was just a bit skeptical when I initially heard it since I was even further out of the reach of civilization than usual (was at cousin's place) and had absolutely no outside communication.
